| SIMPLE,
STANDARD JAZZ ARRANGEMENT -
CELTIC IMPROV WORKSHOP Using Vamps -
in this workshop, we used a simple tune
(The Drunken Sailor -- also known as "Earlie
in the Morning") and a simple idea (a rhythmic
vamp) to create a very simple jazz arrangement
that we could all play and sing together. In the
workshop, we first learned to play the vamp. Then
half the students played the vamp while the other
half improvised. We switched back and forth between
the "vampers" and the "improvisors"
'til everyone had the idea of how it felt to improvise
"over" this rhythmic vamp. Then we created
an arrangement with an introduction, a melody,
an improvisation section (more melody, more improv
...), melody and and ending.
Later
in the workshop, intrepid harpists took individual
solos on Deborah's CAMAC electric harp, using
her distortion pedal, while the audience yelled
"Oh yeah!!!"
This
workshop was limited to 25 harpist participants,
but the audience of over a hundred got into the
action as well, singing, clapping and egging on
the players. We'll try to get some photos up soon!

| HARPBREAKERS:
MUSIC, REHEARSAL SCHEDULE, ETC.
When
Deborah performs, she sometimes includes "Harpbreakers"
in her shows. These are ensembles of local harpers
who learn the ensemble pieces Deborah sends, and
who are then featured as an ensemble in Deborah's
performance. Below are some material for the Harpbreakers
(in PDF format -- if you need
the Acrobat Reader software to access them, click
here.) |

SHE GOES & SHE'S GONE "CLIFF'S NOTES"
(PDF) - Off She Goes & She's
Gone is a harp ensemble piece I almost always
play with HarpBreaker ensembles. These "Cliff's
Notes" are the 3rd & 4th harp parts --
for beginning harpers. But they can also be used
by more advanced harpers to learn and experiment
with the pieces.

DRUM TRACK NOTE: You'll hear
a drum track on the Audio. We won't be playing
with drums. This drum track is kind of like
a metronome. It's to help you learn to play
the rhythm strong and clear, and to help your
ear and your body internalize the swing rhythm.

FULL
SCORE - TUTTI (MP3):
You'll hear all the parts,
plus some vocal cues to help you follow
the score. You'll also hear a drum track.
We won't play with drums, but this track
will help you practice the rhythms.(Right-click

PRACTICE

EXCERPT VERSION (from
Letter A to Letter H, and Letter I to the
end)
These Practice Tracks start just before Letter
A and go to Letter H (the cadenza), then they
fades out and come back in just before Letter
I. As in the "Full Length" Practice
Tracks, you'll hear all the parts, with your
part louder, but the slower and solo parts
are cut out.
I made these Excerpt Versions for practicing
the main part of the tune, so you don't have
to wait through the intro and solo sections
when you're practicing. |
