ABOUT THE SHOW:

For the third straight year, the Ohio Valley Symphony celebrates the Fourth of July with a free concert in Gallipolis City Park - and this year, along with "Stars & Stripes Forever" and the "1812 Overture," a rebel with a harp joins the OVS for a program of musical fireworks!

The world's hippest harpist joins the OVS and music director Ray Fowler at 8 p.m.July 4th -- and she'll also return to the area in October for the OVS's season opener at Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School.

This is the first time an OVS soloist has appeared twice in the same year. "Aside from the fact that she's perfect for a July 4 event, I'm looking at it as an opportunity," said Fowler. "There are people who keep peeking into the Ariel and not quite cracking the door open. When they hear Deborah on July 4, though, they'll want to hear her again."

Henson-Conant is a composer, performer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, comedian and the world's foremost electric harpist -- all rolled into one. She's performed throughout the world, opened for Ray Charles, toured with the Boston Pops and released a dozen albums from Latin jazz to Celtic to blues. She's also revolutionized her instrument with a custom-made, 32-string electric "harness harp."

Topping off the concert again will be Tchaikovsky's beloved "1812" Overture, leading into fireworks.

What can you expect from Deborah Henson-Conant? Well ... this is not your grandmother's harp!

Deborah Henson-Conant is a Grammy-nominated recording artist, and the world premiere electric harpist. Together with the CAMAC Harp company, she developed the world's first comercially-produced carbon fibre electric harp -- the DHC Blue-Light, named for her.

She plays music from Blues to Flamenco, she sings and she talks to the audience. She “dresses like a showgirl, plays the pants off the harp and tells tall tales with the ease of a stand-up comic. Imagine a talkative Harpo Marx in a mini-skirt and you begin to get the picture” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

"Dazzling harp playing, gorgeous jazz/pop singing, comic timing and impressive songwriting... with orchestrations that are as fresh and exuberant as her stage personality." Austin-American Statesman

Henson-Conant combines music, theater, spoken word and straight-out entertainment. To get an idea of the kind of playing that will be featured on her show check out these YouTube videos:

Hip Harpist Headlines with Ohio Valley Symphony

Grammy-Nominated Deborah Henson-Conant: composer, performer, singer, songwriter and electric harpist joins Conductor Ray Fowler and the Ohio Valley Symphony on Independence Day, Mon. July 4th at 8pm in Gallipolis City Park in Gallipolis, Ohio for a concert of musical fireworks. Tickets are FREE. Bring your family, friends and lawnchair.

She strides onstage like a rock-star with her electric blue harp slung over her shoulder. She's the harpist your grandmother warned you about: the Electric Harpist. And she's coming to Gallipolis, OH for a special independence day celebration with the Ohio Valley Symphony.

Described as a “combination of Leonard Bernstein, Steven Tyler and Xena the Warrior Princess” by the Boston Globe, Henson-Conant is an artist who embodies the spirit of American ingenuity and energy. Henson-Conant has travelled the world, performing in jazz clubs and symphony halls. She's appeared on shows from “The View” to “Charlie Rose.” Her TV special with symphony, “Invention & Alchemy,” aired on PBS stations nationwide. But most importantly, Henson-Conant is a world-class entertainer who combines music, stories and humor -- with styles of playing from Flamenco to Blues, and a voice that's been compared to Carly Simon.

On July 4th she'll join the OVS for a concert that mixes perennial Independence Day favorites with completely unexpected entertainment from an artist who epitomizes independent American spirit and ingenuity. Deborah Henson-Conant started off on the 75-pound concert harp -- but dreamed of a harp she could strap on and plug in. Like the American revolutionaries of 1776, she turned to the French for help, and with the aid of the French CAMAC harp company, collaborated in the invention of the world's first commercially available carbon-fibre electric harness-harp, a harp that's now named after her, the "DHC Blue-Light."

She'll bring her revolutionary instrument and her spirit of fun and independence to Gallipolis for an Independence Day with the OVS July 4th and together they'll spark musical fireworks in this FREE concert. From the Star Spangled Banner to the beautiful "Belinda Tree" calypso, from " America the Beautiful" to the Blues, from "Stars and Stripes Forever" to Gershwin's "Summertime," -- this show combines the spirit of American independence, with the sounds and rhythms of the many roots that make American music -- and to top it all off -- bring out the cannons for the 1812 Overture! The show is appropriate for all ages.
