ABOUT
THE SHOW:
Forget
your idea of a demure
harpist – Deborah
Henson-Conant is a
showman, entertainer
and solid musician
who’s
been compared to musicians
from Leonard
Bernstein to Elvis
Presley. She’s
been featured on CBS
Sunday Morning, The
Today Show and NPR’s
Weekend Edition, and
in two full-length PBS
music specials.
Henson-Conant’s voice
is compared to Carly
Simon and Joan
Baez; her
playing to Chuck
Berry and Jimi
Hendrix; and
her humor to musical
comedian Victor
Borge. The
shows are tied together
by story, humor and
ideas. Her website, HipHarp.com and
the YouTube videos
below can give a sense
of what you can expect
at any show.
This
is a particularly special
show, and the story of
it goes back many years:
Deborah
went to Junior
High near Winston-Salem,
N.C. She left suddenly,
moved to California
and lost touch
with
her
friends,
including her big
high-school crush,
Fred.
20
years later they
literally
bumped into each
other browsing
through cassettes
at a music store
in Boston.
In
those twenty years,
Deborah had become
an accomplished
jazz harpist and
was beginning to
tour internationally
and Fred had become
an architect. Fred
and Deborah stayed
in touch.
He listened when
she was interviewed
by Scott Simon
on Weekend Edition,
he cheered when
she got a GRAMMY® Nomination.
She fell in love
with his work,
the home he made
with his partner,
Jimmy, and the
beautiful barn
they built
on their
property.
"It
would be so great," Fred
said, "if
you could come
down here and
do a concert."
Well,
this October, Deborah's
on a tour that
takes her through
the Carolinas,
and on Oct. 9th,
she'll be playing
a concert in Fred
and Jimmy's Barn.
Please
come and share
an afternoon that's
been decades in
coming. And wanna
know about the song Deborah
wrote about Fred?
Below
are video
snippets of what
you can
expect
at the show (well,
ok, maybe not with
the orchestra).

Henson-Conant
is a one-woman orchestra,
with electric
harp, voice and a looper
pedal she uses to layer
sounds in real time, then
weaves solo lines and vocals
above it. Her signature
instrument is an 11lb carbon-fiber
electric harp, designed
specifically for her by
the CAMAC Harp Company
in France, it’s now
one of the fastest-selling
new harp models in the
world and carries her name,
the “DHC
Blue-Light.”
The
music in her shows
ranges from her Grammy-Nominated
Blues to the
tender love song, "The
Nightingale" from
her PBS Music Special,
to a Hendrix-inspired
version of the Star
Spangled Banner. To

the pieces you might
see at the show check
