“Arrange Yourself” is a 4-Week online course by Deborah Henson-Conant that’s especially for harp players and teaches you, the passionate musician, to create fun, inventive solo arrangements – no matter what your skill level is.

You’ll learn to EXPAND simple tunes, SIMPLIFY complex ones, and then use techniques like variation, improvisation, introductions and codas to create your own arrangements – so you can stop worrying about the notes on the page, and start playing WITH the music you love

Hi, I'm Deborah Henson-Conant, a GRAMMY- Nominated composer and performer who's created music from solo harp tunes to symphonic suites. But I started on the ukulele, playing and singing my own little-kid arrangements - and I use a lot of the same skills and principles to arrange the music I record and perform today.

My mom gave me a musical toolbox --
and now I want to give it to you.

When I was a little girl, my mother taught me how to play 'with' music. She wasn't trying to teach me to be a musician, she was just trying to show me how music 'works' so that I could play with it on my own -- the same way she taught me everything else.

I honestly thought everyone knew the basics of putting the bones of music together to make a living piece of music. But in the past few years as I've taught more students and workshops, I discovered that many musicians are at the mercy of the written page, even when it comes to creating simple arrangements -- and that's true whether they're beginners or professionals.

In other words, it's not a matter of technical skill, but of understanding the concepts and knowing how to put them into practice.

I realized that these concepts are the foundation of everything else I want to teach harpists, from Blues, Jazz and Flamenco to how to create your own one-person show.

So that's why I wanted to create this course as my first online course: So you can start playing 'with' music right now, at whatever level you play -- and so you'll have a structure to support all the new techniques and skills I want to show you in future courses, as you continue to grow as a musician for the rest of your life!

About "Arrange Yourself"

How do some musicians create arrangements seemingly 'out of thin air??'
How do others take a complicated piece of music and simplify it?
Are they just more 'creative' than others ...
or do they have skills that anyone could learn?

Watch this video I made to solve an arrangement problem for a harpist recently - then sign up and learn to develop skills, tricks and talents like the simple, effective and FUN ones like the ones I outlined in this video!*

And best of all, you'll be able to ask me questions as we go along, get direct feedback on what you're learning as you apply arrangement skills to tunes you already know ... or wish you could play!

Will these techniques work on absolutely any tune? NO! You'll also learn how to identify which music is likely to be easy to arrange and which pieces are going to be tricky, no matter what.

You'll learn to take music into your own hands and create more than you ever thought you could with what you already have right now.

What will you be able to do by the end:

- Create an impromptu arrangement – at whatever level your playing is - of any tune you're capable of playing

- ‘Write Out’ an arrangement ...even if you can’t read or write music

- Know how to simplify a piece that's 'too hard' and then take the simplified version and expand it into your own arrangement

- Know how to embellish a piece that's 'boring' and have fun playing it

What you can expect in the course:

- Access to weekly online Teaching videosthat you can watch at your own pace

- A weekly Q&A live "Office Hour" where you can ask questions.. Those will be recorded so that if you can’t be there live, you’ll be able to listen to them later – and you’ll be able to submit questions in advance via email, so if you can't make the chat live you can still ask your questions

- A weekly homework assignment (you’re not required to submit homework, but it’s a great way to get direct feedback from me). Each week's homework includes one written assignment, and one short performance assignment (no more than 90 seconds long).    If you opt for the FULL-FEEDBACK version of the course, you'l get my personal written, audio or video feedback on your homework, to help guide you.

- Private Facebook Group - There will be a private facebook group for the class so students can connect with each other, share questions, resources "Aha's" and "Ta-das!" and so I can check in and offer suggestions or see if there's a particular aspect of the lesson that I should make a special video about.

How long is the 4- week course?

Well ... it's actually 5 weeks long because I couldn't fit everything I wanted you to know into 4 weeks. So I added a bonus week!

Email your questions and I'll try to get back to you ASAP with an answer!

"OMG, Deborah....I can't even explain.  It's like all the icky stress that has built up over the last couple of days just literally melted away...

It went SO WELL!  It wasn't perfect, but who cares??  I got through the whole thing, I recovered from any glitches, and most importantly I had a great time playing!..."
Chris Kanowitz

*NOTE: Chris, above, is the harpist I made the video above for. After I posted the video he emailed and told me that I'd made a mistake - he was a guy, not a girl! Our whole exchange was via email, so I'd made a big assumption that "Chris" the harpist was a girl, and referred to him as 'her' in the video. We both had a good laugh ... and I promise to learn your correct gender if you sign up for the class. (Deborah)

Q & A

Q: WHAT SOFTWARE DO I NEED FOR THE COURSE?

A. Each week the course information is provided in three formats and there's always a "low-tech version" so you'll able to access the basic course materials without interactive software because I'll be videotaping each lesson and providing PDF outlines for you to follow.

Here's how it's provided:

- A video you can watch on line
- A PDF overview so you can read it
- An audio file you can listen to online

The "Office Hours" chat is conducted through "AnyMeeting.com" It allows us to be together in real time, and for you to ask questions directly. We try to always have a tech-assistant on that chat in case you're having trouble and need assistance. And if you can't make i to the chat, it's also recorded so you can watch or listen to it later.

So even if your tech-savvy only goes so far as knowing how to link to a Webpage, watch YouTube and download a file, you'll be able to get all the class information.

If that’s a stretch for you, let us know and we’ll see what we can do to help you.

Q. WILL I HAVE TO DO HOMEWORK?

A. It is NOT required to submit the weekly ‘homework’ for feedback, and you will not be graded.

Some people (like me) know that they need individual weekly feedback on their own work in order to fully integrate new learning. Other people like to learn completely independently.

That's why I created two tiers: You can take the course without homework feedback, or you can take it with homework feedback. Taking it with the feedback costs about $25 a week more.

If you're not sure, then you can sign up to take it without feedback, and you can add the feedback option later. We may even have the option to choose week-by-week if you want homework feedback.

If you do opt to take the class with feedback on specific assignments, you'll submit any performances via YouTube - just like you'd post any other video, except you make it 'private.' Any performance homework will be short - under 90 seconds unless you want to submit final project, which will be no longer than 3 minutes.

You'll submit any written work via PDF.

The technical quality of homework assignments isn't important. It's mostly a chance for you to put the concepts into action and get additional feedback.

The reason I even include 'homework' assignments is that I personally find the feedback I get directly from the teacher in online courses to be very valuable. So ... the homework gives you an opportunity to practice the concepts and helps you come up with questions you might want to ask - but it's not required.

Q. WHAT IF I CAN’T KEEP UP?

A. You can go at your own paceyou can take what you want from the course, and you’ll be able to access the materials for at least a month after the course is over.

Different people will take different things from the course. Sometimes I get one ‘elegant idea’ from an online course that gives me all the knowledge and power I need to shift to the next creative level – which is what I want for you.

Sometimes I need to do all the homework and get all the feedback in order to feel I've gotten what I need from the course.

So I wanted to structure this course so that regardless of which way you like to learn, you'll be able to get what you need from it.
