5-Day Harp Improv Challenge is starting this coming Monday Sep 26, 2022
Sign up here https://www.hipharp.com/academy/5-day-harp-improv-challenge-main-page/

It’s all about Power Progressions

It allows you to modulate from Key to Key in a Jazz style of playing

You can apply this to arrangements of any piece of music

Progression we are using in the bass today is
1 – 6 – 4 – 2 – 5
C – down to A – down to F – down to D – G – G – G – G

In a 4 bar phrase

C,2,3,4
A,2,3,4
F,2,3,4
D,2,3,4
G,2,3,4
G,2,3,4
G,2,3,4
G,2,3,4

Back to C and repeat

If you are feeling board you can add techniques
(ie passing tones)

C
(B)A
(G)F
(E)D
G
G
G
G

Or you can explore Right Hand melodies
Using a 3rd below your melody
Using a 6th below your melody
Using glissandos above the bass

Another pattern to use with rhythm

(LH) C  (RH) D – E – G
(LH) A  (RH) B – C – E

You can add this pattern to the whole sequence

C D E G
A B C E
F G A C
D E F A
G A B D
G A B D
G A B D
G A B D

Finish off with a C

==> Discoveries
16:48:28 From Nancy C to Everyone:
You can do something simple and very beautiful.
16:49:03 From Lawrence (Phoenix, AZ) to Everyone:
When you stay on the G for a while, you can catch your breath before going on. Also lets you get a fresh start next time through.
16:49:06 From Heather F to Everyone:
the repeated V chord gives room for ideas to develop
16:49:24 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
Repeating the G, forces you to try a variety of patterns.
16:49:51 From Cathy Hornby to Everyone:
I learned, and noticed again, that I resist repetition since I get bored, but then pushing through it, moving from bored to excited, and finding all kinds of ways to make it lovely was actually exhilarating , liberating and fun. Loved it!
16:50:04 From Marguerite to Everyone:
I’m not sure yet how long
we’re staying on the. g
16:50:07 From Cherie Maffey to Everyone:
Expanding the G, keeps the rhythm going and gives space.
16:50:13 From Joke Verdoold to Everyone:
It worked nicely improvising over the baseline and that worked quite wel, except for the D. Had all the time something that sounded nice, but than had the repeated G to find my way again.
16:50:42 From Joke Verdoold to Everyone:
sounded NOT nice
16:51:40 From Rosemarie Fortney to Everyone:
Felt rushed, worried at start then just freed my brain to play around in right hand, didnt need to change rt pattern ea time.
16:53:19 From Heather F to Everyone:
I like the bass movement (C,A,F,D)which outlines the ii7 chord then that V chord happens an brings your ear back to home (I)….. the whole thing is actually ii-V-I
16:58:57 From Tara to Everyone:
Tacking onto Heather’s point…It also works to outline the V7 chord with the LH, one bar each on G-B-D-
16:58:59 From Tara to Everyone:
f
17:02:38 From Heather F to Everyone:
Hey Tara good idea….I think we are getting all Shenkerian analysis-like!
17:08:01 From Nancy C to Everyone:
Nuances of dynamics.
17:08:11 From Kimberly to Everyone:
I felt much more free to play the melody this time because the left pattern became almost automatic
17:08:36 From Carol Booth (Australia) to Everyone:
When I added a 3rd or a 6th below the bass note it meant I had to concentrate on my left had and my R hand was on its on with no brain, and that worked so well and was FUN
17:08:43 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
When the left hand plays louder, grounding, the right hand can play anything softer and it still sounds good.
17:08:44 From Belinda Hunt to Everyone:
I was relieved when you said one finger 😅
17:09:39 From Joke Verdoold to Everyone:
At last I resolved my hearting D problem
17:10:29 From Nancy C to Everyone:
You also mimic the patterns with contrasting crescendo Y softer.
17:12:31 From Marguerite to Everyone:
now that I’m leaving the G at the right time it’s fun to improv above it
17:14:38 From Nancy C to Everyone:
There is a live closed captioning transcription on this Zoom.
17:26:21 From Mona Seering to Everyone:
Fingers and heart is relaxed even tho I couldn’t play like you
17:26:27 From Rosemarie Fortney to Everyone:
Lost in time, lovely musical traveling!

17:27:35 From Marguerite to Everyone:
really fun when I quit thinking and just started doing
17:27:40 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
I liked adding the rhythm to pattern.
17:27:58 From Belinda Hunt to Everyone:
those last RH shapes were really helpful. Some of the things I thought would be harder were actually easier.
17:27:59 From Rosemarie Fortney to Everyone:
I added the third below in left hand to add flavor😊😊
17:28:02 From Joke Verdoold to Everyone:
Now it was fun finding nice chord-progressions over the baseline. Lost myself in that completely.

what a jazz waltz rhythm is
17:33:27 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
right hand 1, 2 ,3 ,5 pattern
17:33:37 From Jane in Finland to Everyone:
Carol and others: I was given the same advice recently from an old traditional player – to go back to my old compositions and they’d get even better
17:33:46 From Lawrence (Phoenix, AZ) to Everyone:
When you improvise, find a way to periodically stay in one place and get your bearings before going on
17:34:30 From Marguerite to Everyone:
practice my hand patterns separately o I don’t have to think as much during these
17:34:44 From Rosemarie Fortney to Everyone:
How can you not cheer up with that!
17:46:14 From Tara to Everyone:
Must be going. Great fun to be with you all!
