About the Advanced Steps

Steps 8, 9 & 10 were created as a lever-harp version of the original 3-part Warm-Up series I created on Pedal Harp.

This warmup combines 3 basic techniques I wanted to warm up on every day: arpeggios, scales and ‘classical-style’ techniques. I wanted to warm up both hands equally, and I also wanted to develop my ability to modulate through all the major keys of the harp.  Since I couldn’t find any warm-ups that worked all those elements, I created these for myself – originally on Pedal Harp, and later on lever harp.  I then realized they were a great foundation for any harpists who wants a powerful ‘cross-training’ warmup that also helps them develop their modulation skills. In particular, the ‘classical’ warmup not only modulates from key to key but also has several transitory modulations inside each key.

Current Status

As of Valentine’s Day 2024, uploaded the Pre-Publication edition of Steps 8, 9 & 10 – thus completing the first flight of the Modulation Staircase!  YOU can download it and play it below.  Currently there are no training videos, but if you’ve watched the training videos for Steps 1, 2, 3 & 4 you will know how the game works. Apply the same principles as you play these warmups, and use the Star Chart Modulation Wheel that’s on the Resource Hub as you did with Steps 1, 2, 3 & 4.

Technical Issues

Warmup #10 (“Classical-Style”) poses some technical challenges that we’ll be addressing in future videos, having to do with different lever-change patterns, including changing two levers at once in several different ways:

  • Octave up / Octave down: two levers, an octave apart, both going in the ‘same’ direction: either both being raised, or both being lowered simultaneously
  • Thumb up / Thumb down: changing a lever with the thumb to make it easier to play LH notes more quickly before, after or during the lever change
  • Twist: the thumb simultaneously pushing one lever up, while the 2nd or 3rd finger pulls another lever down

Join the Creative Process – give Feedback!

Since we’re in the development phase of these warmups, we invite you to join us in this creative process as a First Reader by giving us your feedback on any errors you find in the music and let us know what IS working and how it’s impacting your playing, fluency and comfort with modulation – scroll down to find the button for feedback.

Can’t wait to hear from you about it!

We'd LOVE your FEEDBACK!

You are the first readers of this music!  Thank you!!! We’d love to hear your feedback on what’s working, what’s confusing, what you love. Please just be kind. This is a brand new kind of product – a hybrid between sheet music, app and class – and we’re still trying to learn the best way to share it.

Thank you!
