_builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">How did the World Harp Ensemble come about?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>I\u2019ve been playing \u2018inclusive\u2019 music since I was a kid, <\/b>music that allowed professionals to shine and beginners (or kids, like me) to be an important part of the music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because of that I got to be a PART of music with a high artistic caliber, playing <i>along with<\/i> stellar musicians from the time I could barely play or sing. So this idea of music that is <i>created<\/i> to have a place for everyone is part of my cultural DNA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Enter Shelley Fairplay:<\/b> In 2014 I became friends with a harpist from Wales who has a similar view of combining musical inclusivity with virtuosic soloists, and in 2016 Shelley offered her own ensemble, \u201cDynamic Harps\u201d as the testing ground to create a series of pieces that would fulfill this mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>When the World Harp Congress invited me to perform in the final concert in Hong Kong in 2017<\/b> I realized this was an opportunity to launch the World Harp Ensemble internationally.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">How Does the Music\/Game Work?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Each game\/piece is 1 &#8211; 2 pages long<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Each game\/piece has a part for:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><b>Foundation Players: <\/b>Beginners &amp; Fledglings up to Professional<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><b>Embellishment Players: <\/b> Intermediate up to Professional<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><b>Limelight Players: <\/b>Virtuosi, Soloists <i>on any instrument<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>For Players &amp; Non-Players<\/i><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><b>Vocals<\/b>: For singing harpists, audience members or choral groups<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><b>Ambiance, Percussive &amp; Movements<\/b>: Sounds &amp; movements for players &amp; non-players, including audience members and dancers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">&#8220;The Harp-Breakers&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">I use this same music for my &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipharp.com\/project\/harpbreaker-experience\">Harp-Breakers Experience&#8221; project <\/a><\/strong>, a project that allows me to connect with loacal harp players and bring them on stage with me during concerts &#8211; whether I&#8217;m playing solo, with a symphony or with a chamber ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;We are a Worldwide Community&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">We are a Worldwide Community<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Since I created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipharp.com\/academy\/\">\u201cHip Harp Academy\u201d &#8211; my online teaching academy<\/a> &#8211; I\u2019ve become more and more aware of harpists as a world-wide <i>community<\/i>.<\/b> Though broadly scattered throughout the world, a few reaching celebrity status &#8212; but with a growing foundation of impassioned amateurs, like-minded learners keen to support each other.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The old world of the competitive elite-harpist now has a growing foundation of players who play for the love of playing alone, from children to beginners who start after the age of retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Creating the opportunities for people to be safe within their own technical level, and yet challenging for high-level performers is a powerful tool for learning and developing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It accelerates the progress not only of the \u2018beginners\u2019 but also the clarity of the soloist.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;East Meets West &#038; Barriers Fall&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">East Meets West &amp; Barriers Fall<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>The theme of the 2017 World Harp Congress is \u201cEast-meets-West.\u201d<\/b> I wanted to focus on what it means to \u2018meet\u2019 and to connect as musicians across cultural barriers. In my online school, Hip Harp Academy, I\u2019ve discovered how powerful creative community is &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and I want to expand that, creating a repertoire of deceptively simple musical \u2018games\u2019 so that any time any two harpists anywhere in the world are together, they have a way to play together <i>spontaneously.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;What if Music was like Team Sports?&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">What if Music was like Team Sports?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>If that sounds unlikely, just think about the fact that spontaneous group-playing happens all the time with sports teams and jazz and Blues players<\/b>:<b> <\/b> So I looked to the heart of what makes that possible, to see what are the common elements between playing team sports and playing Jazz or Blues &#8211; and I noticed there are <i>three<\/i> elements that are the same in each for successful spontaneous playing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><b>Sports teams<\/b> play a <i>specific game<\/i> (soccer, basketball, etc.), everyone plays by the same rules, and each person plays a specific position.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><b>Jazz players<\/b> \u2018call\u2019 a specific tune, they all follow the same basic guidelines of jazz improvisation, and each person plays a <i>specific<\/i> <i>position<\/i> <i>or role <\/i>(bass, melody, accompaniment) at any one time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>I want us to be able to do that as harpists,<\/b> whether we\u2019re playing together for fun, building ensemble repertoire, or launching into an encore after a concert.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I want it to work even if the harpists play different kinds of harps, don\u2019t speak the same language and play at different technical levels. And I want the audience to have a part so they can play along.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;My Mission&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; background_color=&#8221;rgba(224,153,0,0.32)&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>One of the big advantages of music over sports is that every music game can include players of <i>all<\/i> technical levels,<\/b> with the less-advanced players focusing on simpler, more supportive roles until they develop the confidence to step into the limelight a bit more. <span class=\"s1\"><b>So <\/b><\/span>every piece has space for a virtuoso-soloist to shine and each piece combines a sense of community, collaboration and creative challenge, from the very simplest line for the beginner through to the infinitely expandable improvisational space for a virtuoso.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; making it easy for them to move swiftly from the audience to the stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The effect was like an instant ensemble and the feedback was that harpists found being part of the ensemble deeply moving because they could focus on the <i>ensemble engagement <\/i>versus fussing with notes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The result was musically rich, easy to play, and highly engaging both for audience and performers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>Exactly what I was hoping it would be!<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243; Bay area. One of the factors we were testing this time was the ability to rehearse an ensemble virtually. \u00a0To do that I worked with ensemble leader\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\">Kristal Schwartz Barlaan and her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.angelic-harp.com\/harp-lessons.html\">Angelic Harp Academy<\/a> students <em>(who did a great job being bluesy as well as angelic in the concert)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.26.6&#8243;
