_module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like any student or creative professional, you\u2019ll need supplies and a way to organize your materials.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have time to get organizational supplies this week \u2013 or if you already have what you need, that\u2019s great. \u00a0If you don\u2019t, then find a way to create a similar organizational structure for your coursework until you can get the materials you need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you already have a favorite way you like to organize your music and practice materials, then use your system<\/strong> but just look through mine to see if there are any additions or adjustments you might want to make based on what I do \u2013 or what any of the other students in the course do.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;COURSE CONTENT&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/77657483\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\">Here are the supplies I have for setting up my binders:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A 3-ring binder (or 2-ring binder)<\/strong> (I like the kind that lets me insert a spine and a cover)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Binder dividers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A 2- or 3-hole punch\u00a0<\/strong>(depending on whether your binder has 2 or 3 rings &#8211; different countries have different conventions in binders)<\/li>\n<li><strong>A pencil case that fits in the binder<\/strong> (I keep my pencils, my coins and sometimes my tuner in it)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paper<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center fr-dii fr-draggable\" style=\"width: 573px;\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/ruzuku_production\/rte_attachments\/15961\/25l8w-hht-2-binder-supplies.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"431\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Two Binders in One: Resources &#038; Performance&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.5.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I take an online course, my binder may look like it has a lot of segments<\/strong> \u2013 but I see a &#8220;learning binder&#8221; as two notebooks in one &#8211; that may\u00a0<em>eventually<\/em> be separated into two notebooks. Those two notebooks are:<\/p>\n<h3>A. Course Resource Notebook<\/h3>\n<p>This part is the things that you learn and may want to review-\u00a0<span>\u00a0the Worksheets, Modules &amp; Questions. They will eventually live in a different notebook that simply becomes a resource you go back to if you want to review the course.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>B. Your Gigging or Performance Notebook<\/h3>\n<p><b>This part of the notebook is the\u00a0<\/b>materials you would actually<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>play from: lead-sheets, one-sheets with arrangement tools, performance prep checklists.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The lead sheets, sheet music or notes for the tunes you&#8217;ll play will probably be kept either in alphabetical order, organized by genre, or organized by &#8216;set lists&#8217; (tunes you play together) &#8211; depending on what works for you.\u00a0<span>I use different systems at different times based on whatever will make my current goal easier..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>This\u00a0will eventually become your gigging notebook<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019ll have everything you need in it to take your repertoire around with you. \u00a0Some people like to put it on an iPad so they have a digital copy at all times, and it\u2019s fine for you to do that with the materials you get in the Academy, so long as you don\u2019t share those materials with others.<\/p>\n<p>But for now &#8211; while you&#8217;re TAKING the course &#8211; I recommend keeping them in the same notebook \u2013 because that\u2019s one less thing to misplace.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;How I ogranize &#038; archive my binders (Click to Open)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.5.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>I generally set up my binders like this, whether it&#8217;s for a course or for a project or a gi:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>These sections will eventually become your gigging binder:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Contact information<\/strong> (this may be irrelevant for this course, I just always have it at the front or top of any organization)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Timeline \/ Calendar \/ Schedule<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Resources &amp; Things to Know<\/strong> \u2013 This is a segment I started adding because there are always things I just kind of \u2018need to know\u2019 before I head into a project. \u00a0Sometimes they\u2019re logistical things and sometimes they\u2019re mindset things, and sometimes the answers to questions I had. \u00a0<em>Sometimes I put this near the front of the binder and sometimes near the back.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Repertoire List\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 This is where you\u2019ll keep an overview of your repertoire \u2013 a list of the tunes you <em>want<\/em> to play as well as the ones you\u2019re already playing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lead Sheets &amp; Manuscript<\/strong> \u2013 These are the actual sheets of music you\u2019ll play from. Normally you\u2019ll put them in alphabetical order.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Questions for Experts<\/strong> &#8211; this is the place where I keep questions I want to ask. I started doing this when I was first learning to write for symphony, and I had a gazillion questions \u2013 some were for specific instrumentalists and others for the conductor, or the music librarian. I couldn&#8217;t just call these people up every time I had a question, so I started <em>collecting<\/em> my questions, based on who could anser them,\u00a0 so when I had access to those experts I could ask them. That\u2019s why I call it \u201cQuestions for Experts.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blank paper:<\/strong> I like having easy access to blank paper so I can add notes or ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>These will eventually become an archive of the course and you\u2019ll put them in a separate binder:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Worksheets<\/strong> &#8211; I like to have a separate divider for the worksheets because I often forget what module I got them in, and since I want to use them over and over again, I want them to be easy-to-find. <em>Sometimes I put them behind the Modules and sometimes in front.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Modules 1, 2, 3 &#8230;\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; I like to have a separate divider for the handouts, notes &amp; homework for each module \u2013 so a 10-week course would have 10 different dividers (you can see two different ways I might do this in the photos on the previous page)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archives &amp; Dregs<\/strong>: Pages you <em>think<\/em> you can probably throw away, but you\u2019re not sure yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.5.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see variations on this in the photos &#8211; but the above list is how I&#8217;d probably set up my binder for <em>this<\/em> course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In some ways, &#8216;organizing&#8217; our work is a way of imposing structure from OUTSIDE<\/strong> &#8230; whereas using any of the structures in my courses &#8211; from the 12-Bar blues to a standard arrangement form &#8212; seems more like using structure to build something from the inside.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By creating binders and folders on my computer for a course, I&#8217;m creating a place to recreate a structure that already exists.<\/strong> \u00a0In a physical world, you might buy a book, which would already <em>have<\/em> that structure outlined. \u00a0In the digital world &#8211; I finally realized after taking many courses &#8211; you have to recreate that structure yourself.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;A Few Binder Tips&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.5.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>A Few Binder Tips<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I almost never use \u00bd\u201d (thin) binders.<\/strong>\u00a0 I almost always use binders that are at least 1\u201d wide and often as much as 2\u201d wide. \u00a0I do that to make space for additional materials, and also because it\u2019s easier to flip and find pages when the notebook is a little larger.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I always have a few more binder dividers for sections I haven\u2019t thought of yet,<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and I put them in the pocket at the back of the binder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Binder Labels (Click to open)&#8221; Normally you\u2019ll put them in alphabetical order, but for now, if you\u2019re using the \u201cFun-Size Celtic Favorites\u201d or \u201cMini-Melodies\u201d you\u2019ll just print out those pages and put them in this section.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>(These will eventually become an archive of the course and you\u2019ll put them in a separate binder)<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong>Worksheets<\/strong> - I like to have a separate divider for the worksheets because I often forget what module I got them in, and since I want to use them over and over again, I want them to be easy-to-find. <em>Sometimes I put them behind the Modules and sometimes in front.<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Modules 1, 2, 3 ...\u00a0<\/strong>- I like to have a separate divider for the handouts, notes & homework for each module \u2013 so a 10-week course would have 10 different dividers (you can see two different ways I might do this in the photos on the previous page)<\/li><li><strong>Questions for Experts<\/strong> - this is the place where I keep questions I want to ask.
