This is another rough version of my harp prayer. \u00a0I came up with the chord progression by working with leaves roadmap in different modes, and then tweaking it further. \u00a0You can stop listening after the speaking ends.<\/p>\n

I decided to try writing out my words and reading them. This is a video of me lighting the Sabbath candles, describing when they are traditionally lit (18 minutes before sundown) and a ritual of bringing the light energy into oneself. \u00a0For this video, I have adopted an archetype of sorts. Traditionally, the Jewish woman lights the candles and makes the hand motions I display. I never did this hand motion growing up, but I wanted to infuse more meaning into the ceremony of lighting the candles. The music is the traditional melody for the prayer that accompanies the ritual of candle lighting. I recite, in English, the prayer for the candle lighting while playing.<\/p>\n

How authentic does this appear? Does it hang together? I’m happy to say that spending the time setting the scene, lighting the candles, even dressing up a bit out of my pandemic uniform, really made me feel more at ease making the recording! I really enjoyed the story structure, and playing a few short phrases that hinted at the melody of the blessing but didn’t quote the blessing. Should I recite the prayer in Hebrew rather than English?<\/p>\n

My plan is to make a number of short videos playing different traditional Jewish melodies and telling stories with them, particularly ones that hold personal meaning. In this one, the candle holder was my mother’s and has great meaning to me. The candles are leftover nubbins from when my kids and I used to make candles for our Sabbath celebration. I like your idea of a blog or some commentary alongside since at least for this course I’ll be keeping to the time limit for the videos and I didn’t have time to clarify the meaning of the objects in this one. I may need a “prequel.” Would you want this additional information before watching the video (i.e. the candle holder and candle info)? I assume that over time I’ll figure out how to integrate it all!\u00a0<\/p>\n

The song character is childhood innocence seen through the heart of teenage heartbreak & angst. The part I’m submitting has only a hint of the innocence part, and is the mostly angst. I was able to make the G chord more interesting with a G sus and added an Am\/F vamp. Does this work?\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is very slow and I need to work on the speed and transitions which is just time and practice….. but the so-called Rhythm Changes in the B section are BEASTLY and I\u2019m worried that as I play this up to speed this section will become unmanageable. Perhaps I should just take the Melody out of the B section and just play an easier improv as I blow through the changes?<\/p>\n

I learned a TON from this tune….my fear of levers is GONE, I feel comfortable with a slap bass as a simple accompaniment, I learned what Rhythm changes are, and I learned that a lot of jazz and Latin tunes borrow heavily from the \u201cstandards\u201d such as \u201cI got Rhythm\u201d and \u201cTea for Two\u201d ! \u00a0

Ignore the fact that my backdrop is semi-sheer. Still working on the Bossa, I used it for roles. Remember my goal of improv on the Bossa? well here is my first stride. I’m in the key of Cm. I had to transpose from Am because that was too low for my voice. I will sing for the full project, this is just a 51 second instrumental snippet.<\/p>\n

(It IS flanked by a bridge with a different comping pattern though….so maybe it won’t be noticably different?)<\/p>\n

I had a lot of challenges to get to this point in performance. I had to memorize all the tunes I was doing on short notice — and make a set painting that’s the backdrop. The one mic was the guitarist idea as if we were live. We moved around between tunes – the center person starting the tune. The performance was 70 minutes in length. I pulled out the Chewy box for this, as I’m thinking I should get back to what I started a while back with pulling out music I hadn\u2019t played in ages. I’m more focused on the technical aspects than the musical in this video. I have major trouble with lighting & getting a decent sound recording. I also had to bring the harp into the living area so I could get my camera back far enough to get the shot I needed. I don’t have what I consider a decent background for video in the house. As for the talking, I just did a straight narrative about what I was doing with no beats of back & forth from music to speech. Did that work?<\/p>\n

For this week i didn’t know exactly what our homework assignment is. \u00a0I thought we should try something with the blueprint. \u00a0I tried this by mixing an Arabic sauce with the Spanish Baroque flamenco. \u00a0I have made two videos. \u00a0The first was where a snake had to come out of the basket at the end. \u00a0The snake got caught and you can see me pulling the string. \u00a0I was not sure what to submit. \u00a0The video with or without the snake. \u00a0Because I thought it might be a bit too childish and less about the harp with a snake, I chose to send in the regular video. I am curious about feedback to improve things. \u00a0I found it difficult to make logical transitions. \u00a0During the Baroque part the g sharp pinches in terms of sound, so I tried to hide it with a decoration. \u00a0Because of my decorations I almost lost a clear rhythm again.<\/p>\n
