This is the 3rd week I’ve given myself this challenge – to sing my news to Blues. It was very hard to post this week’s video because:
A. It’s long (so feel free to stop at any point … but why am I saying that … of course you always stop when you want)
B. It went to a place I wasn’t expecting – one that was a lot more personal
C. I forgot to include the news! So I added the news in bullet lists below.
It’s a challenge to just sit down and be myself in front of a camera and to allow whatever is to be, to allow the experience of imperfect completion, and to share that experience, but I’m committed to that right now as a way to engage with some kind of personal choice in my struggle with perfectionism.
A disclaimer, by the way – I doubt that I really ‘invented’ the term ‘The Reiterative Model.’
And here’s the actual news about upcoming shows and courses:

For harpists: “Baroque Flamenco Bootcamp” is now sold out. My next course is a Beta-Version of “Hands on Harmony” tentatively scheduled for April 11. This is a one-day virtual retreat (with access to the replay afterwards if you miss it or want to review) – but please note that attendance is limited during the Beta tests. Please join the “First to Know” list for notification about it – and other courses, but please also know that that may not guarantee you a spot in this Beta version. The course will officially open later in 2015.
And about that rehearsal I mentioned in the video …
Here’s a selfie of Tim and I took in my studio with the music Wednesday night, rehearsing the show-in-the-making, the “Dukorsky Syndrome” – I mentioned it in the video.
Here’s what it actually looks like when we’re rehearsing. I’m impersonating all the characters, singing their parts (which gets a little tough in the duets). Doing it this way lets me come up with spontaneous changes based on what I think they’d ‘actually’ say or do or sing at a particular moment of the show.
You had me mesmerized on the jazz noodling – and you can talk at the same time!!! I find it difficult to talk and keep the fingers going, especially on the right notes. I would love to take a class on what you just did. However, I over-committed on just taking your Baroque Flamenco Bootcamp…..glad I did, just having a full life going right now, with work, harp, Easter services, and travel. I will finish it, I promise, thank you for the extension on making it available!
Thanks for this snippet, you made me laugh!
Hi Deborah!
I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for sharing this! I think it was very relatable to how most of us feel at times! Are we good enough? I was kind of casually watching until you got personal and then I felt like I related instantly!
Looking forward to seeing you and hearing you and meeting you one of these days. In the meantime, you remind me of Jay Leonhart. “Salamander Pie”, with Mike Renzi. I am in North Andover, MA Hope all is well – you sound and look terrific!
Cool! I just took a listen – never heard it before, but it’s so fun – thank you! Hey, I hope you’ll be able to come to the show on April 25th at Circle of Friends in Franklin, MA!
Hi Deborah,
Your best teaching and advice is all about stepping outside our comfort zones so you model that beautifully. As an intermediate, what I’ve already learned just from watching you is to be musical and creative rather than be flummoxed by notes and technique. Keep it coming!
Thank you Jennette! I love seeing that in words. Beautiful! – DHC
This is the Deborah I love–fearlessly introspective and boldly sharing your most vulnerable self. You are always MORE than enough! Isn’t it being our most authentic that results in true artistry? Thank you for being so amazing!
Thank you, Clarisse! At the moment I am watching you in my memory in a clown suit, me utterly surprised and completely in smiles.
Totally mesmerising. I love that you actually didn’t read out the ‘actual news’. Clearly there was something else to say at that moment. Thank you. x
I know, Joy! It was so funny when I was done and realized … oh … wow … I didn’t actually say what I ‘meant’ to say, but I guess that’s what I needed to hear!
Hi Deborah!
The second part of your video was so emotional (my eyes got wet!!), you should really keep this song and sing it on stage, it is really terrific! I LOVE it!!!!! Thank you!
Thank you Valerie! I love it, too and started working on how it might work as a song. It is so amazing to ‘stumble’ on these things. Even in this moment as I’m writing this I was just working on another new song that happened also completely by accident as I ‘fixed’ a ‘mistake’ in the Groove Jam music (as I’m trying to prepare it to upload) – and I just spent the last hour exploring like it’s another world I stumbled into – like it’s a beautiful street I fell from my drab cold Boston reality into this sunlight. A totally different feeling from the song in last week’s video, but much the same experience of discovery. And all of this because I have made a commitment to ‘walk the talk’ that I expect of you! Thank you!
