Sometimes, creativity starts small — with just a spark, a pattern, or a playful idea.

For Debby, that spark came from a few “snippets” she’d been experimenting with in Hip Harp Academy. Those short ideas grew into her first-ever original piece to submit for a final project. She calls it:

“Snatches of Snippets.”

“It’s not really a big project — just a little piece of exercises based on snippet formats… but I’m happy with what I created, especially since it followed a consistent pattern.”

What is a Final-Beginning Project?

At the end of each Quarter, Academy members share their discoveries in 3-minute ‘Final-Beginning’ Projects — videos and short written interviews that share their creative process and how they used what they learned the previous quarter to move closer to their creative goals.

From Snippets to a Complete Piece

Debby started with a simple theme, then let it grow:

  • First in single notes
  • Then in thirds
  • Then in sixths

As the piece took shape, she discovered something important — she couldn’t always remember exactly what she’d played. So, she reached for staff paper and wrote it out, capturing each section so it stayed consistent.

Writing it down didn’t limit her creativity — it gave her the freedom to build on her ideas without losing them.

Choosing Creation Over “Everything Else”

Debby admits that making time to create was just as important as the music itself.

“It took determination to let other responsibilities go and keep working on this creation until I got a format I liked.”

She kept returning to the piece, making small changes until it felt right. She didn’t wait until the last minute — instead, she spent the week shaping her music, letting it grow in complexity while keeping a clear, repeating pattern.

The Balance of Structure and Freedom

Even though Debby describes herself as “paper trained,” her process shows how structure can actually create freedom.

By not relying solely on memory, she could focus on playing with confidence and expression — knowing the framework was there to guide her.

That’s the heart of the Hip Harp Academy approach:

  • Start with a simple pattern or structure
  • Build on it gradually
  • Let it become uniquely yours
