ABOUT THE SHOW:

"When I was 19 ... decades ago,
To displace the anxiety of my own birthday,
Instead of a party, I planned a concert,
Plastered posters all over town,
And sang my way into the next year.
Now it's a yearly tradition."
(Deborah Henson-Conant)

“Dazzling harp playing, gorgeous jazz/pop singing, comic timing and impressive songwriting” Austin American-Statesman

“Reshaping the .. harp into a jazz instrument"
New York Times

"A combination of Leonard Bernstein, Steven Tyler and Xena, Warrior Princess." The Boston Globe

"The Jimi Hendrix of the harp." Steve Vai

Deborah Henson-Conant is a GRAMMY®-Nominated one-woman orchestra, with electric harp, voice and a looper pedal she uses to layer sounds in real time, then weaves solo lines and vocals above it. Her signature instrument is an 11lb carbon-fiber electric harp, designed specifically for her by the CAMAC Harp Company in France, it’s now one of the fastest-selling new harp models in the world and carries her name, the “DHC Light.”

Forget the demure harpist – forget the Classical Music -- forget dozing off in the back row. Henson-Conant is a showman, entertainer and solid musician who’s been compared to musical greats from Leonard Bernstein to Elvis Presley.

Henson-Conant’s voice is compared to Carly Simon and Joan Baez; her playing to Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix; and her humor to musical comedian Victor Borge. The shows are tied together by powerful, funny, affirming stories and universal humor. Her website, HipHarp.com and YouTube channel give a good overview of what you can expect at the show.

She's toured with the Boston Pops, opened for Ray Charles at Tanglewood, jammed onstage with Bobby McFerrin and offstage with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. She's been featured on CBS’ “Sunday Morning,” NBC’s “Today Show” and NPR’s “Weekend Edition,” and interviewed by Scott Simon, Studs Terkel, Charlie Rose & even Joan Rivers. She’s been featured on television shows from PBS and Charlie Rose to Jon Rivers and "The View" and in two full-length PBS music specials.

She’s known for her songs, her evocative singing voice, her fusion of music and theater - and.for transforming the classical concert harp into a "Street Harp" - a powerful, fully electric instrument that's a seventh of the size of a concert harp, and light enough to strap on like an electric guitar. Her playing ranges from full-out bluesy to heart wrenching ballad. This is a feel-good, outside-the-box, bring-the-folks-you-love kind of show for audiences of all genders and ages- folks who want to celebrate what it means to passionately follow your own creative path.

The music in her shows ranges from her Grammy-Nominated Blues to the tender love song, "The Nightingale" from her PBS Music Special, to a Hendrix-inspired version of the Star Spangled Banner. "My birthday’s Nov. 11 and I've been waiting for 11-11-11 since I was seven!" -Deborah Henson-Conant

GRAMMY®-Nominated Electric Harpist, Deborah Henson-Conant, celebrates her birthday, the beginning of a new album and the end of a month-long tour all on the same night: 11-11-11, when she comes home to the Boston-Area to play at the Regent Theater in Arlington, MA.

“People always have album ‘release’ parties,” she explains, “but I want an ‘Album Inception Party’ -- I need to connect with people when I start the album, include them in the process, and get their energy behind me. What better day for that than my birthday? And what better place than my home-town theater?”

Henson-Conant made her start as a Jazz-Harpist in Boston in the 80’s, was signed to major jazz label GRP, and has been touring, composing and releasing albums and DVDs since then. She first worked with a trio, “harp, bass & drums,” then in the early 90’s began writing for orchestra, debuted her orchestra show with the Boston Pops, and spent the next 15 years composing and orchestrating for electric-harp and orchestra. In 2006 she released a DVD/CD culminating her orchestral show – the project, “Invention & Alchemy” appeared on PBS stations throughout the US and netted her a GRAMMY®-Nomination for the whole album.

Along the way, Henson-Conant collaborated with French harp builders, CAMAC, to develop the world’s top-selling electric harp, which was named after her, the “DHC.” That harp has become an integral part of her work for the past 15 years. “The original idea of having a portable harp was both to be able to tour more easily and to be able to be more physical on stage.

From her early days of playing straight-ahead jazz on a vintage 75-lb concert harp, she’s evolved to her current shows that balance between Mini-One-Woman Musicals and concerts, with music from Blues to Flamenco, a voice that’s been compared to Carly Simon and an 11-lb carbon fibre harness-harp that was invented specifically for her, and has now become the top-selling electric harp in the world (hey, even Lady Gaga’s harpist plays one!)

This year Henson-Conant’s toured the West Coast, down South, Midwest, and France - but on 11-11-11 she’s coming home to play! Deborah Henson-Conant, performs at theRegent Theatre in Arlington, MA on Sat. Nov. 11, 2011 at 8pm. TIX: $22 advanced, $25 at the door, $50 VIP, $15 Students & Seniors. Tickets available on-line at http://www.regenttheatre.com/details/DHC-11-11-11, by phone at 781-646-4849, or at the Regent Theatre Box Office at 7 Medford St. Arlington, MA

Brief Artist Bio
She’s soloed with the Boston Pops, opened for Ray Charles, and jammed with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.
Guitar legend Steve Vai calls her the "Jimi Hendrix of the harp." The New York Times credits her with "reshaping the serenely Olympian harp into a jazz instrument by warping it closer to the Blues." Unlike artists who focus on a specific style of music, Deborah Henson-Conant's music ranges from Blues to Flamenco, unified by her relentless exploration of a single instrument that was invented specifically for her. Audiences will see a custom-built instrument and the world’s foremost player of that instrument.

About the Theater

"This is a great old Vaudeville theater, with a deep, wide stage with plenty of room to move around, a decent lightboard and great sound. The seats are comfortable and there's not an obstructed view in the house. It's also about 6 blocks from my house, so of COURSE it's where I have to have my Birthday celebration!"
