I’m playing the comping pattern with RH improv we learned in Harp Time Live on July 1 following the chord pattern of Leaves in Gm. My husband is playing the Leaves melody. I’m playing very slowly because it still feels like patting my head with my RH and rubbing my stomach with my LH! I do want to pick up the tempo. With practice, I did improve by 17 seconds when recording this!

TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED COACHING ON. Provide specific questions here so I know what you want me to give you feedback on. Remember, I’m not grading or assessing your work – I’m coaching – and I can only do that if I know what you’re TRYING to do, so I can gear my coaching to help you achieve that.

I would like to know what is working. We’re planning to use this as improv when we play a jazz standard related to this piece! How much of this comping pattern is too much? Should I insert more arpeggiated chords? I’m thinking I have to do more with my RH. Suggestions? I welcome any suggestions for integrating this into the piece.

This is Leaves Roadmap. I have loved this song and fabulous chord progression for so long! I play it instrumentally on piano in E minor. In A minor for vocals on piano and harp. Great to try the E min on harp. Improvising on a diatonic instrument is somehow more relaxing, if that’s the right word.

No particular coaching required at this stage thanks

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

Yes, it’s my very first foray into green screen! It’s after midnight in NYC so I didn’t have time to learn how to remove grey outlines; or for the life of me how to not disappear before the leaves did! Please bear with the clunky visual aspects. 🙂

I made 2 roadmaps for “Leaves”. In the first I coloured the sheet music and the other is just the cord numbers to show how much repetition is in there.

this is the first part of my self-induced Lead Sheet Marathon where I hope to learn a new accompaniment each week which I will essentially FAKE from a LEAD SHEET. These will be used with my TRIO/Duo of Harp,Violin, and Voice.

I dropped the baseline during the nasty descending tonality lever part (section one). is that OK?
-also the constant eighths is supposed to “represent” a flowing constant in the background but is it tooooo much? should I break into a different feel more often?

a week is not long! Also I have squeaky levers which need attention…so sorry about that!

Roadmap for Leaves:
In the first half, I am playing a single note in the bass, trying to keep a steady beat and play the right chord sequence.
In the second half, I am playing chords with the left hand.
For both, i am noodling with the right hand,  and hoping it fits.

The challenge for me is to keep a steady beat and to keep the left hand going with chords in the right sequence.  I started out trying to play chords in the left hand and soon discovered I’d better go back to playing a single note in the left hand (as DHC told us to do)  until I “get it.”  I don’t think I’ve really “got it” yet, so I need coaching on how to make the roadmap musical — more specifically, jazzy.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

It seemed a lot easier to play along with DHC or other musicians on the youtube videos than to play by myself.  Holding my own was a challenge.

Putting big chunks of color on the road map helps me see the chord sequence.  I also put in a “large print edition” of the chord names, which makes them easier to see as well.

Inside Jazz tunes. Since I was not familiar with the song, it was really hard to sense the chord changes with instrumental jazz videos. So I found a vocal on YouTube that I liked: Doris Day, 1956. I transposed it to Cm, but still don’t have a sense of the chords from the bridge to the ending. Hence the “detours”

Besides listening/playing with the track over and over, any suggestions for knowing when to change chords? She is singing a bit rubato, so I had to slow down and speed up a bit, then totally lost track of where I was toward the end.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I did make it through “on track” yesterday, but am running fever today. I didn’t want that to stop me from submitting. This is the only recording I made.

Roadmaps #1–Leaves

I followed the written progressions and played with the chords to make them sound more fluent.

This week started out great by memorizing the chord progressions, but then it got frustrating. I spent at least an hour each day with the progressions and play along videos. I couldn’t seem to add much. I’m used to sheet music, so I’m needing to develop becoming creative. By the end of the week I did feel better by coming up with this arrangement.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I’m sure there are others who made the transition to become creative. Any ideas would be helpful. Maybe I just need to be patient.

Also, is there a hand out for noodling ideas, similar to the left hand hand out?

Describe your image – if there’s anything in particular you want to say about it to help others know what they’re looking at, add that here.

I’ve color-coded the roadmap to “Leaves” so as to emphasize that the song goes back and forth between major and minor.  For example the major I chord is one shade of green and the minor i chord is another shade of green; the ii chord of the major key is one shade of purple and the ii (with flat 5) of the minor key is another shade of purple.  I’ve also used shape and position of the colors to bring out the commonalities and differences between chords.  The chords in the major key have colors filled in whereas the chords in the minor key have only outlines.  The “one” chords have a colored rectangle below the chord symbol, whereas the “five” chords have a colored rectangle above, etc.  Seen this way, the whole song is only two-five-one progressions with the occasional C chord in between (which functions both as a “four” chord in the major key and a “six” chord in the minor key).

I couldn’t stand the click-track sound, so I abandoned the play- along and made my own version, based on the thought that I best do what I can do.

I attempted a little noodling and was trying to do something with my left hand. I think by the end that I started to simply play straights chords & improvise in-between. I could use some left-hand ideas. I also am interested in some comping ideas. I don’t have a clue or plan what I was doing other than getting the roadmap in there, but that could be a good thing

I saw this as changing keys from G major to E minor. I color-coded the different keys. The place where I got stuck was the C chord at measure 21. Wasn’t sure if it was considered the IV of G major, or the VI of E minor, or something totally unrelated. You’ll notice question marks.

I found it difficult to play along with the play-along videos.  I don’t know why and what I can improve.  While playing along with Deborah’s play-along.  I may have doubted for too long whether I should play a 7 or a 9 chord.  I notice that I don’t know enough about this style of music.  I play a few more notes in an empty piece.  My groove is then not appropriate, which distracts me.  I have trouble playing with a swing rhythm.  I have watched several You-tube videos.  I’ll just keep looking for the easiest one.  Last night I had to choose because of the deadline.  I chose the Korea version because it is not too fast and I like the violin.  I know that sometimes I play the rhythm wrong and I’m late with the parentheses.  I also occasionally play a wrong note.  I would like coaching on: What do I have to do to learn to play along with a play-along in the right groove and the “Jazz” style?

What do I have to do to learn, to play along with a play-along in the right groove and the “Jazz” style? How can I learn to play with the swing Rhythm with others?

Describe your image – if there’s anything in particular you want to say about it to help others know what they’re looking at, add that here.

About the roadmap. In the beginning I was confused.
I didn’t realize then that the minus sign stood for a minor.
About the progressions.
I suspect that there are two ways to read the Roadmap only in E minor.  Here you think in the cord progression 4-7-3-6 and 2-5-1-1 etc. The other option I think I saw Deborah doing in the warmups.  Think in G major, for the first part of the song and for the second part you modulate to E minor.  Then in part 1 you get cord progression 2-5-1-4 and 2-5-1-1.  I’m curious when you use what and why?  Thinking in 2-5 progressions and modulating might be easier??

The photo is for the first assignment.  I used the numbering that I got familiar with in Hands On Harmony to help me.   I think this was what was asked for…haven’t done a video yet though…..

Is there anything else you want me to know about your graphic/written homework?

I also facebooked this.   I hope to join the first chat on Monday July 5….unless it’s cancelled due to Holiday…..just realized….
