Describe your video so I know exactly what you’re sending me. If there’s anything special you want me to look at, listen to (or ignore), tell me what it is.

My video for Inside Jazz Tunes:  The two segments I would like you to listen to are 0:01-0:40 which is the tune, “Leaves.”  The second segment  2:07-2:56  is my improv.  That is the section I especially need help with.

TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED COACHING ON. Provide specific questions here so I know what you want me to give you feedback on. Remember, I’m not grading or assessing your work – I’m coaching – and I can only do that if I know what you’re TRYING to do, so I can gear my coaching to help you achieve that.

I am having a hard time keeping the rhythm in the improv section.  How can I make that easier to do?  Also, towards the end of the improv section, I go back to the tune — in quite an awkward way!  How can I make that transition smoother?

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I look back at my earlier videos for this unit and cringe!  I think I am beginning to “get it.”  But I still have a ways to go.  I don’t “get it” all at once, that’s for sure!  It takes time, but things do gradually sink in.

to get my video under 90 seconds, I only used the first 8 bars for the in head, improv and out head. That was hard after practicing with repeats. I liked the first two parts better than the ending. When I was playing thru to prepare, a couple of times I raised a lever at the very end, but somehow I didn’t end up there this time. I guess that’s good, it shows I DO play it differently each time!

what is working, and what is a good next step for me to work on?

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

Yes, I transposed it to Eb. Someday, when I decide to sing it, that is the key I want to be playing it in.

I played part of the improv section, using scales, and transitioned into the last melody. I question the transition.

When I watch myself, I seem to sound stiff, even though I’m trying to relax and play with feeling. This is what I need coaching help with.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I feel myself being able to experiment more with different styles and rhythms. I wasn’t as frustrated this week. I do still have a hard time improvising, and coming up with ideas, but I expect to learn more ideas as I go.

This is a clip from “Leaves” showing a section I’m pretty happy with and a section that I’m less pleased with.  Favorite: 0:04 – 0:49.  Less pleasing: 3:15-4:00.
My favorite section has a pleasing counterpoint and I think conveys a sense of wistfulness that I find appropriate.
The less pleasing section is one where I got lost and felt that I had to hunt with the left hand.

I can think of ways to work on the section where I usually get lost (in the B section of the out-head), but I welcome other ideas, both regarding practice and for graceful fudging-in-the-moment.  My ideas so far include: a) just keep playing it more; b) practice with both hands chording while singing or whistling the melody (the familiar, famous one); and c) begin with a quick pass through the chord progression with blocked chords only.  What else might be helpful?

The first video is of the part I like more, the second is of my least favorite part.

The first video is of the part I like more. I feel that it is more flowing and moving forward.

The second video is of the part I like less. I feel that at some point I was lost and didn’t know how to continue.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I think that at my least favorite video it would have helped not to think so much and just flow with the music until I feel at a more grounded place with the music, and also maybe to play less notes, something that can help me think for a minute how I want to continue.  Another thing is to play just chords on one part.

My video is playing around with patterns in G:2-5-1-4-7 Em:2-5-1 (Autumn Leaves)progression

I always play this progression differently depends how I start and what the feel is. Here I improvised a pattern based on the warmups and original melody. please  tell me wht is working. I am a bit burned out playing a wedding ceremony and reception yesterday but did wanted to revisit this practice. Especially since I play this in different keys. At the wedding I played it in Gm as it is more embedded than the Am. I have to concentrate on the numbers when I play in Am. Thank you.

This is my homework, but not as it should be. Due to lack of time, I sat down and directly recorded it. And that is not how I like it, for it gave me no possibility to get myself at ease with the piece. And I noticed that in tiny spots all over the piece. What I love about this single take is that, even without practise, I was able to go on.
The improv-part is from 1:38 till 2:54.

I know lack of confidence made my sound weak and out of tune at spots, but I would love to hear what works -specially in the improv- and why.
