Following DHC’s concern [much appreciated] about the early hours for the Aussies to be on Zoom for the live chat, this humorous Blues song evolved! And rest assured, come Spring, daylight saving etc., it will rebalance…

TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED COACHING ON. Provide specific questions here so I know what you want me to give you feedback on. Remember, I’m not grading or assessing your work – I’m coaching – and I can only do that if I know what you’re TRYING to do, so I can gear my coaching to help you achieve that.

No particular coaching required

This is my first attempt at playing and singing the blues. I’m just going with a bluesy feel rather than trying to get it ‘right’

I’ve not seen my family/little grandchildren for 10 months and they were due to come and stay last week. We were all so excited then my son tested positive for Covid. The cancelled visit inspired this song. My granddaughter calls Covid “the Germ”!

Please tell me what is working and maybe how I might extend what I’ve done. Any other suggestions also welcome

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

This was actually my first take. No written music either – I’m beginning to let go and trust myself more. Yay!

I’m working on trying to get more comfortable presenting and trying to keep my thoughts together. I’m going to be working on different chord progressions, this week is honestly not one I thought about until I was trying to sort out my notes and had an ah ha moment. I did a one take taping and then tried to cut down the video by adding notes

I’m still trying to keep my thought together. I’m not a concrete linear thinker, I’m abstract- millions of different things are happening at the same time. This is an example of me trying to focus in on what I’m trying to present and stay on track.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I’m planning to do a series of chord progression videos and eventually incorporate pieces of these into a presentation. I’m still at the point where I have to force myself to do this – things make sense to me but on the way to being expressed my thoughts tend to explode out in all directions.

I am accompanying my mother’s 1955 MGM recording of “Til You Remember” written by her manager Seger Ellis.

I missed a few things that I planned, but the slow tempo allowed me to do more than I can when I play it at the speed I like to sing it at. If I want to play/sing it faster (solo without Mom’s band), what could I leave out and still keep the great harmonies? – But you answered this for me in OFFICE HOURS. So….what is working?

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I am wearing one of her sequined tops that she wore when she sang out. This song is on the flip side of the 45 that was released on MGM that she decided NOT to promote because she got married to my Dad. The main song was published with her picture on the front. This song is all but lost to the world, I think. (They both are, actually)

The words I used were written by Leroy Carr in 1932, “Blues Before Sunrise”. I played an intro, sang a melody with bass and comp, played a chorus, sang another melody, and finished with an ending. I’m not sure about the public domain rules.

The singing was very awkward, being out of my range and comfort level. I also wasn’t sure how to mix the 12 bar pattern rhythm with the singing rhythm.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I never sang solos before-just quartets, singing alto with specific music. This was WAY out of my comfort zone. I learned that blues singing doesn’t appear to be consistent in notes or rhythms, making it hard for someone like me to learn. Many also had such dark lyrics.  My goal was to find a blues song and sing along with the harp, so that’s what I did.

I think end of June, Anne said something that really hit me deeply : sounded like “who are you at the harp?” I realized I couldn’t give an answer to this question…. Since then, having fun with the summer of improv, I’m walking through the classes and finding pieces of answer.
Though having fun with the bleus, this week I needed to put my question and answers in to music…. It ended up in a mix of things I’ve learned in the summer of improv (Thanks Deborah!!!)

Is the way I go from one part to another ok? or would it be better to kind of put something in between? I tried to modulate and come back, does it sounds ok?

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I thought using this as a base for my final project….

I tried to make a chart from my song.
Between this writing and the video there are some differences….
It was a nice exercice to write things down this way, not to forget what I am doing…..

Image? I don’t know, about that. Using your guidelines, I just scribbled down a blues of the 13 in a dozen type.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your graphic/written homework?

Sorry, that I lacked imagination today, but the exercise was fun to do. Learning to play it wil take more time, but in Finale it sounded a kind of oké to my ears.
