Strings of Passion 2021 – [Due March 29] – Half Baked Projects*

[*We’re all confused about what week is what — but the FEEDBACK for this module is on the Week 11 Chat]

This is the page where you can view all the homework videos, images and text that members submit so we can go over them during the weekly masterclass-chats.

The Half Baked Project for “Strings of Passion” was to “throw together” a version of the final-beginning project without even having to think about making it good in any way — and to be able to ask for feedback how to take it a step closer to what you want to do.

I’m submitting a video recording of the song Shalom Aleichem which will be part of my final project. It’s the song to welcome the Sabbath. It’s special significance to me will be spoken in my final project. The song played straight is about 1.25 minutes. I want to extend it for several reasons, but the most important one is I love it and would like to play it for a longer time without just repeating it over and over. In this video, I didn’t start out playing it straight. I will do so in my final project before playing this “extended” version with improvisation. I can send you an .mp3 of it played straight if it will help you understand this submission. I’m playing it at a faster tempo than I normally would but I wanted to fit the whole thing into 90 seconds (plus a few!). It should be slower. I have to work a little on some levers which led to obvious hesitation for a couple of chords when I realized I was going for a natural and hadn’t flipped the lever! I announce the intro, melody and improvisations in this recording. That will not happen in the final project!!

TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED COACHING ON. Provide specific questions here so I know what you want me to give you feedback on. Remember, I’m not grading or assessing your work – I’m coaching – and I can only do that if I know what you’re TRYING to do, so I can gear my coaching to help you achieve that.

Does the improvisation work? Am I chopping the song up too much? It invites improvisation! I would like to know what is working. I realize I’m not giving you much to work with….just a song. I’m still trying to decide on the “setting.” There will likely be candles, a glass of wine and a challah. BUT, I also like the idea of being outside at sundown! Weather permitting, I may set up outside.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

When we talk about some kind of “show,” I envision this song as the opening. Shalom Aleichem means Peace Be With You. I do want to bring feelings of peace and community to people, and not just people of a particular religion.

Describe your video so I know exactly what you’re sending me. If there’s anything special you want me to look at, listen to (or ignore), tell me what it is.

This is already my finished project, a farewell video for two friends of mine who both died of Covid 19 recently.
I offered to record music for the funeral, which will be broadcasted as live stream.
I chose to improvise with the Swedish folk tune “Vem kan segla for utan wind” because it was a tune that we often sang together when we met during summertime, and the lyrics were a few of my first Swedish words I learnt.
When I listened to the recording, I had the impulse of adding some singing to it, not the original tune but a very free and lamenting version with dissonances to express the grief I feel.
When I played this version to my husband he said he did not like it at all, because it was not clean and too many dissonances, not the beauty of the tune, too emotional, almost embarrassing.
To be honest I was really injured by these words.
I then sent both versions to the family to let them choose, and they took the instrumental version, which did not make it better for me.
I shared both versions in the Facebook group and was astonished about the completely different reactions. At first I felt much better, but then something weird happened: the ick voices arouse! All the positive comments were nothing but the attempt to be kind to me and not really honest. So embarrassed about these thoughts!

Finally I decided to make an official farewell video taking the soundtrack of MY choice, the vocal version, to stop hiding. To me it seems to be the most personal way to say good bye.

My main trouble is to be afraid of offering some musical outpour that is below my usual instrumental ability. Instead of following my impulse and offering my honest emotional momentum I tend to hide and accept to be injured by one of the most closest person, my husband. How can I develop more confidence?

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

The Video is too long, the singing is in the first half.
It is set to public view because it should be findable for all the relatives even if they don’t have the link.

I used zoom video to try to create an interesting backdrop. Not sure if the harp fading in and out worked or was annoying visually.
I think the file was very large in spite of being less than 90 seconds in length.
The room I was in was a bit cold so my fingers were not working very well!

I bring the story to a conclusion and then repeat the first verse of the song. Is this working?

I could sing that verse and then end the story, and just add a couple “Little Cindy’s” at the end.

I took out the bridge from the quarter baked version and just kept everything simple and child-like.

I wrote out a practice plan
The Pachelbel chord sequence in F is to get me used to playing in that key.
I record what i did in my practice journal, along with any notes of what needs work.

Weekends i have more free time to focus in on new arrangements, and hope to start practicing with others.

This is my half baked.
In the end I chose neither You Have a Voice nor my oriental song. The feedback you gave me about my singing encouraged me to use this song for my project, because here the “soft” way of singing really “fits”.
This is a very personal song for me and sharing it is way out of my comfort zone. It’s a lullaby I wrote for my inner child, called “Für meine Kleine”, meaning “For my Little One”.

The arrangement is built like this:

Intro
Singing the song
Instrumental version of the song
Singing the song
Ending

The singing version is the same twice so you can just look at the first 90 seconds and it covers the first singing and the interlude. That’s all you need to see for feedback.

I wasn’t sure how to arrange the piece, since it only has one verse. When I play it for myself I usually play an instrumental version, then sing, then end with a different instrumental version. Here I chose to sing it twice, but am not sure if it’s a good idea. What do you think?

If I leave the structure as it is in this video, I think I should play a different accompaniment for the second singing part.

The “interlude” is just an instrumental version of the song. Improvising just didn’t feel right here. Since it is a lullaby I thought it would be nice to hear the song again and the repeating also is a bit like rocking the baby to sleep. But again, I’d like to hear your thoughts about this.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

This is the translation of the German lyrics:

Dear little one, you can sleep now
You aren’t alone anymore
I am with you and protect you
You never have to be lonely again
I am with you and take care of you
I am here for you

Half Baked

I’ve wanted to do something with this Song,”Winter Sky” because it describes something of my winter experience when I see the bare oak trees against the sky.
I also took a little poem and created a little song, like an old English folk song to sing before and after it. The little song sounds happy, compared to the feeling of the Winter Sky song which is a melancholy filling in this sandwich.

I was trying out not caring or thinking much about what I was doing.
I had just come from a long hike, looking at Oak trees and just sang and played without trying to contrive anything.
In the middle I do an a cappella section and I think I was trying to convey something there and to me it looks unnatural and I look tense to myself.Does it to you, too?
My question is, how does this “not trying” attempt come across? Also the harp seems really soft to me.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I’ve shortened both the songs to make them fit under 90 seconds.

This is a condensed version of my project.  In the final project, I will play a little more of the slow part of I’ll Fly Away, and then at the end I will play the whole tune.

This tune is imbedded in a story, which will be a little longer in the final version, but not much.  It is mainly the tune that will be expanded.

What I want coaching on is:  1) the presentation of my story and how the story and music fit together.  So, partly,  I want a drama coach here.
And 2) Is there anything I can do to spice up the tune at the end?  I decided I would need a third hand to provide a drum beat, so I’ve abandoned that idea.

DHC challenged me last time and asked me if I wanted to take a risk. Man, is this a risk. I sang a solo for the first time every. Want feedback on that. I can take the pain. I also told a very painful story that was a risk. I could not seem to play during the story because I had to live it as I told it. The singing is the beginning then I jump to the big mistake and never get to the resolution except for the change in rhythm.

  1. singing
    2. noodling is still a challenge for me. I wanted all to hear the shorter version to see if you could tell I was transitioning from sadness to being ok.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

If possible, play to the end to hear the final transition in tone. I want feedback on singing but we can skip part of that. I tried to edit in iMovie and it would not load.

This is part of a story song. To cut out most of the story, please start at 55 seconds. I pick up 2/3 through the song at the improv bridge. I also shortened the ending by doing 2 turnarounds instead of 3. That will get it down to 90 seconds.

Aside from my slight hesitation “looking for” the final chord, I spent some time trying to figure out exactly when to start the gliss and how long it should be. Does it seem a natural ending to you? If not, how would you change it? Also, always love to know what is working

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

This was one of many, many songs in rotation that my mother practiced every day even though she had given up her singing career to get married. When I start to sing, I am applying to the harp the best version I can remember of the piano accompaniment she played.
P.S. She frequently used glisses on the keyboard 🙂  !!

This is a tune called “Looking at a Rainbow through a dirty Window,”
written by Scottish musical Calum Stewart.  I first heard this tune at my last live concert before the Covid outbreak.  Rachel Hair & Jon Jappy were doing a tour around NZ at the time.
There is a bellbird singing towards the end of the tune which I liked as this  is a tune of Hope, and even with my mistakes the bellbird must have thought it sounded like music.

I’ve struggled with the Strings of Passion but finally I remembered hearing this tune and wanted to have a go at playing it.  I used ideas from the blueprint for The Nightingale for the intro,  I altered the melody using both hands, and pivoting for the improv, and the 5 part arrangement.  Please tell me what is working .

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

I wanted to play this tune but didn’t think I could.  After being in the Academy for nearly a year now I’ve learnt how to use the melody and expand  and improvise which meant I could at least have a go.  On the final project I would like to try out some more improvisation.

This is my half-bake.  I am using the storytelling format.  So, I’m just asking you to assess the storytelling. Mainly, is it too long, do I need to play more harp during the interludes (i know the playing is sloppy.. would it better if I vocalize and play chords)?
Does the storytelling have to be shorter.  thank you.

This is a slightly altered version of my “story” of harp playing.  You suggested that I try less crossing of fingers to make the base easier for my fingers, but I have learned the piece so well that that complicated things.  Do you think that the arrangement sounds “thin” or not rich musically?  If this video is too long, just listening to the beginning 60-90 seconds is fine,

I need help making the sound more rich, without more complicated.  How do I make the melody stand out more?  How would suggest a simple improv to make the song last longer without just repeating it.  I’m afraid to go off of the page and I need help with that.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

No, I enjoyed making it.  I have found a group of black harpists through our community, and my long term goal is to be able to talk about certain key harpists in the Black community from ages past to present, and play a bit of their type of music,  How fun and what a lofty goal!

This is a snippet of my “How I came to harp” story.  Based on feedback from a previous homework submission, I tried noodling on the harp while I spoke once I got to the part about loving the feel of the strings.   To keep this snippet short, I edited out the earlier parts of the story and the clear prefiguring of the tune (Brian Boru’s March), as well as the tune itself.

I’m finding it challenging to speak my story while playing.  I can make it through, but the speech is a bit more halting and the music is a bit less organized.  I was also unsure whether I should just keep playing while I finished the story and spoken tune introduction, or pause the playing at some point.  I also wondered whether I needed a clear reprise of my earlier tune prefiguring after the more aimless noodling.

I found some tools on the New Blues section of the World Harp Ensemble Headquarters, in particular the scratch tracks & the Harp 2 sheet. I think I need to make this feel more like a duet. I feel like there is redundancy during the head & outhead so wonder if i should vary the two parts more. I decided to give a chorus to each of the Sallys while the other comped. I could really use some comping ideas. I think I can figure out some improvisation for the choruses, but riffs are always welcome. Also, I feel like I need a transition to get back to the outhead. It doesn’t show on this video, but I played around with copying what I hear on the scratch tracks & on videos with you playing this with orchestra. However, my experiments felt pretty lackluster.

I’m sending you a real half-baked video.  I’m a little embarrassed because I want to put too many impossible ideas in a video, which fails.  I have been invited to come for an interview with music assistant for seriously ill children.  If I manage to make a good video, I want to use the video for the job interview.  The organization (the song factory) only wanted to work with guitarists.  My idea was to tell in the video that the harp can do more than just play angelic music.  I wanted to emphasize this with different backgrounds or accessories to use.  I was only able to start the video this evening. You  notice that I also do not master the songs.  Really half a bake. I used two harps but one is in angel mode. is that two much disturbing. I used the puppet, but I had to put it higher. you saw by accident my leg. Can the puppet work, if I did it better? Or is it too much and childish?

i would love to get feedback what to improve? What do you think that is not working and what I have to leave?  I can handle criticism, because I can learn from it. With the second song I do not known what to do with the rhythm and cords? I would like to have any tips?

Describe your image – if there’s anything in particular you want to say about it to help others know what they’re looking at, add that here.

i see harmony, two people together, connected.
I also see (my side on the right), yellow and green colour.
for me, this sounds/feels like:
yellow –> 3rd chakra = solar plexus (a.o. compassion)
green –> 4th chakra = heart.  (connection)
Coincidence but it feels like resonating with me.  Two working themes in my life.
i would say, connecting through me with others
