I created this Valentine’s video to tell a very romantic story of the monthly bouquet of flowers my father gave my mother for 64 years and 4 months to celebrate the day, the 9th of the month, when they were married. The story took up a lot of time so I played very little of their song, The Anniversary Waltz. I cut the story as bare bones as possible to fit this into 90 seconds!!

If less is more, what could you have NOT known in the story and still have the video work for you? Did you know what song I was playing? I like my musical introduction. Is it too long (10 seconds)? This was very emotional so I found it difficult to speak and play. Besides glisses, what would be some other simple thing I could do while speaking? I’ve been wondering if I could play bits of the song.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
Many thanks for this assignment. I love sharing this story, and combining it with their song was so tender. It took a lot of tissues! I plan to “produce” a longer version with the story and either the entire song or at least the full A part repeated.

Briefly describe your video and how it relates to the prompts and ideas in the course.
Once upon a time, far away from here, way beyond the stars you can see in a clear winter night, there was a tiny little blue harp on a planet that had not seen any sorrow or sadness, no gravity and no heavyness in thoughts.
It was more a harp spirit than a physical instrument, and it played by itself, it needed no hand to get out all the sounds, they were simply there, and they were perfect as they were, whatever they where. But then something unexplanable happened: all of a sudden the light an immaterial blue harp spirit was drawn to the blue planet called earth, and attracted by it‘s gravity with a big pa-dom it was born into the material world, where it could no longer sound without a helping hand“

This is a video Valentine’s card. I am playing an old standard …
The Very Thought of You, by Ray Noble, 1934.
I used a lead sheet but I didn’t like all of the chords so I made some substitutions – some for taste and style and others for ease of playing. I have a much better understanding of chord function since I finished the Hands on Harmony course…do the chords sound ok or should I be more or less adventurous?
One of my “goals” is to get away from reading music and this is now the third tune which is completely by memory and my own improvised arrangement over a planned out harmonic structure…wooohoo

Memorizing a melody is difficult! Hints?
Chord progressions are EZ to remember. If I build the tune using your 6 steps to learning a LS, all falls into place but the melody is a real bug for me????

I actually have sent this out to friends (still laughing about this) it is not my usual Modus Operandi but..hey maybe it signals the beginning of a whole new me!😂🎶

What I am trying to do is to throw my whole self into the Baroque and Flamenco. Since I am not yet 100% comfortable with playing the tunes, I am a little stilted in my presentation. I had a blast recording this) over and over and over), but I don’t feel as free as I would like to be.
Question: What can I do to make this more carefree and dramatic? I want to have fun with this, and be more relaxed. How can I enhance this?

I am outside in the cold, playing and talking for my Valentine video. Listen to the large birds who joined me in song as I play Wind Beneath My Wings!

I wanted to sing, but had the melody for the song, so I talked using my own words, not the lyrics, to be the accompaniment. I kept it super simple because my life is anything but simple right now. Did the words work as accompaniment? What could have worked better?

It was so important to me to do this outside on a country road (actually my long driveway at our place in the mountains). Because the weather was really cold and damp, I hope my location added to the piece even though it was hard to move my fingers in that temperature.

I could use a little help on making glissandos more beautiful with more grace and flair.

This is the first time I have recorded myself singing with my harp. Also I have not done any work with my voice for over 10 years and have issues with allergies/reflux that have not resolved yet – though I am still searching and open to healing. This is me working with what is still there. Maybe that is part of the healing.

This is my second time ever singing with harp and recording it. I was losing my voice, so I thought about changing the conditions and went down to Bb where it was a little easier. I think making a Valentine for my 6 year old niece helped me be more connected and less inhibited, and I was really happy about being in my body, sincerely connected with my physical gestures. I used to have this naturally when I was younger, and then lost it when I went to music school. I realized in the 2/13 workshop how much I wanted to shake those inhibitions and get back into my body and back to my Self! Just want to say your work is truly transformational! Thank you so much, Deborah!
Do you want feedback on your homework (this may mean that it gets shown during the chat) (see the note below about this choice)

My Sweet Adeline Chorus decided to send each other Valentines this year just for the fun of it. So being in this class, OF COURSE I had the perfect reason to make this video. I sent it to small groups and a lot of individual people with personalized emails, and got GREAT responses.

Still looking for a place in my house that is “private” and isn’t a messy background. These are vertical blinds on a window…using the tripod on a small table to get the right height. Only trouble is the cold basement and taking the harp down the stairs….
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
The first video I submitted, I reversed the tempo to teach the little ones the song, I also had a false start to change a lever because I forgot what I was doing. I think I had character in my voice with the kids, but not so much in my playing. Here’s that one: https://youtu.be/tsO1xrpEmmo
But since this week is about character, I think I had more character (both personally and musically) in this one, so I changed it.

I am playing a section of “When I die” in Bb blues scale by Laura Nyro. I played around in imovie with color and sound to add character.

Im accompanying my self mostly with bass line, The verse is a vamp (there are many interpretations-Im doing Bb, Ab, Eb) and Im trying in my right hand some rhythm accent. The ending little vamp is in the intro as well and is longer. Im not playing exactly to the original music but to the way I feel it. SO, can it work this way? I wonder is the harp to much, too little? The sound effect is Large Room with gives a bit if echo and I know it disguises the sound a bit. Is that wrong? 😉
