WELCOME TO THE HOMEWORK DISPLAY FOR
Strings of Passion 2021 – [Due March 7] – Week 8* – ROLES Module
[*We’re all confused about what week is what — but the FEEDBACK for this module is on the Week 8 Chat]
This is the page where you can view all the homework videos, images and text that members submit so we can go over them during the weekly masterclass-chats.
This week’s Homework for “Strings of Passion” was to put what you’re learning into action and then SHARE what you’re learning or experiencing in words, in images, in videos.

I made a show plan! Putting many random notes together in a spreadsheet.
I’m submitting this for the Character module as put character in the plan to remind me what characteristics i want to embody in each piece. Sometimes i get bored with music that i am playing over and over again, and thinking about character and putting it into the practice really helps me to stay present with the music. It was a good exercise to define character for each song.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your graphic/written homework?
It might be hard to view in class, but i’d welcome feedback
The first half of the show is just me and my harp and I think it have a good solid plan for that. The second half is inviting other musicians & singers to perform with me (one at a time, to keep it simple) I am less sure about how to lay that out, but it may become clearer once we start practicing. All performers are in the process of getting vaccinated, so hopefully by May!
Am i missing anything in this plan?

This is my homework video for the Roles Module of Strings of passion. My attempt was to take on the role of a belly dancer for playing my song “Oriental Night”.
I know the Celtic background doesn’t fit, but didn’t have time to think of something else. So just ignore that.

I’m not happy with this video. Taking on the persona of a belly dancer was much harder than I expected. It actually made me much more nervous than usual during filming. And the result doesn’t look natural at all, my facial expression is much too arrogant, I think.
Do you have ideas how to make playing the middle part with the repeated thirds (see attached pdf) easier? When I composed it I thought mostly about the sound and I still like it. But playing was it always a challenge.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
I made this last minute on Sunday night and just used what I had as a costume.

Video for 2021 Strings o’ Passion half-baked
The video has a tiny blip near the end and I can’t figure out why – but it was actually a single take no cut and paste (i don’t know how to do that…yet)

It is very slow and I need to work on the speed and transitions which is just time and practice….. but the so-called Rhythm Changes in the B section are BEASTLY and I’m worried that as I play this up to speed this section will become unmanageable. Perhaps I should just take the Melody out of the B section and just play an easier improv as I blow through the changes?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
I learned a TON from this tune….my fear of levers is GONE, I feel comfortable with a slap bass as a simple accompaniment, I learned what Rhythm changes are, and I learned that a lot of jazz and Latin tunes borrow heavily from the “standards” such as “I got Rhythm” and “Tea for Two” !
Lots of hard work but really worth it.

I recorded the “You Have a Voice” song.
I selected the last minute and twenty seconds of the song.
The challenge for me is just putting myself out in a recorded form.
I allowed myself to be more vulnerable in this one almost to the point of introversion. Wondering how that comes across.

I was just taking a first try, let me anything you see that has forward moving value.

Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
Yes, It is on YouTube and I don’t have the link!
I found it by typing in my name.
It is One Minute long.
Is this a problem?

This is a video of when I first saw a harp played. I tried playing the opening same shape one note up – After you heard the true melody, did the intro tie in okay?

My noodling still is awkward. Did it sound too redundant?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
Videoing is good for me as it allows me to see my pauses that I don’t feel when I am playing.

This is a barebones, 80-second version of “Cosita Latina” that I recorded while practicing. It’s the no-frills version where I am right now with it.

In the B part I’m working on fingering, so I’m not playing it exactly as I’ve heard it played–yet. I’m also struggling with the strumming in the rhythmic contrasting section and have substituted something else. Do the octaves work? Or can I do something completely different?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
I’m not planning on using a looper with this, so how can I incorporate a vamp with improv? I would also like any guidance you can give on how to begin working with the blowing section. Thanks.

I’m sorry my left hand is not showing all the time. I need to keep working to find a good camera angle.

This is the story of the first song I tried to play on the harp. This is a song I can no longer play in context and just thinking about doing this as homework had me up crying in the middle of the night. I only made one recording. I kept missing dropping down to the A chord and simplified it on the fly. I also ended up with a little extra beat: I lost the starting pitch and played a little bit before the last sentence in beat 6 rather than replay the intro, so I guess I didn’t follow the formula exactly, but this is what came out.

My intention/goal Was to play the 12 bars of blues, no stopping, no judgment, no perfection and submit a video without worrying. You suggested in office hours that I just keep playing and not worry about getting off beat so I have been doing just that.

This is an exploration of Bossa Nova rhythm that I made by melding four videos together. I used body percussion in one video plus three videos on the harp: a repetitive bass pattern in the Bossa rhythm, a mid-range scale pattern of straight quarter notes, and some high-range noodling. It doesn’t have a great deal of harmonic movement, because my focus was mostly on incorporating and internalizing the rhythm. That doesn’t mean you have to ignore the harmonies, though, since I’m curious about the overall impression the video makes.

I wasn’t quite sure what this was going to sound like when I put all the pieces together–how does it come across? Jolly? Way too complicated? Intriguing? Like it’s definitely not Bossa Nova? If I want to take this idea farther (Bossa by role separation), what direction would you recommend I explore next?

Storytelling-practise: “The first time I saw a harp”. But actually “How real is live as I see it?”

This is a video where I took a section of DHC’s Merceditas and used a split screen to show what goes on with the hands & pedals. I attempted a brief spoken introduction to explain what I’m about to do.

I mainly put this together to practice speaking along with playing the harp. Right off the bat, I wonder about things like the timing of the speech; does it sound natural; contact with the audience; does what I say make sense, etc.
My other dilemma is that I’m feeling rudderless impulse wise and generally thinking in terms of the 7 strings. I’ve enjoyed learning Merceditas but am not sure what I can do with it, especially since there are parts of it the harp serves an accompaniment role. I do wonder if one can create an orchestral reduction for the harp because I’d love to play with video editing skills and attempt a self-duet although I realize that’s pretty ambitious.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
I stold this idea from DHC, even down to the music that is used. I feel all I really accomplish here is to show that I’m capable of taking written music and learning it. That’s not a bad thing. I know I do it pretty well, but I don’t know if I’m hiding behind that ability and exploring creative possibilities.

Oh my goodness. This stuff is just fab. Sally, I have definitely never seen pedals in action so that alone is a revelation. Teddy, I am still drooling over a DHC32 and I still want my very own to play on. Thank you so much all of you.
