Baroque Flamenco Musical Games

Today we looked at the Rondo form. Using a Melody Section (which grounds the piece) and an Improve Section (which expands the piece)

For the Improve Section

  • We started with a simple Descending Bass line and created a 4 bar phrase of 3 counts for each note in the Left Hand (LH)
    • A – G – F – E
  • You can then add more to this progression or keep it simple
    • Add a gliss after the E or add a 5th above the bass note
    • A – E , G – D, F – C, E – B
  • If you want you can play anything in your Right Hand (RH)

For our Melody Section we took the Baroque Flamenco melody (as our grounding phrase)

The Baroque Flamenco Melody played in RH

Phrase One

  • E-F-E, E-F-E, D-C-B, C-B-C-B-A

Phrase Two

  • E-F-E, E-F-E, D-C-B-A

We then combined the two sections into a game.

Starting with the Melody section then going to the Descending Bass line we learned as our improve section

16:33:42 From Joke Verdoold : For the record, here it is May 26, not May 22.
16:38:59 From Tovelah Hirsch : Descending baseline ,LH, 4 notes A G F E
16:43:07 From Tovelah Hirsch : Other things can happen Play a fifth above it; ae, gd, fc, eb. a four bar phase – with a descending base line .
16:44:38 From Jane in Finland : or jazz it up with a slap bass followed by chords in the right hand: 3x am chord (C E A) and the last time the same shape down to B D G#
16:53:58 From Tovelah Hirsch : if you get lost-add a fifth from the bottom note-
16:58:03 From Lawrence : When you gliss with both hands, how do you fit it into the one measure of time?
17:02:59 From Sally : I tend to start my gliss on beat 2
17:03:38 From Sally : Or maybe the “and” of the first beat
17:03:43 From Lawrence : When you are glissing with both hands, it seems to help to start on beat one.
17:04:14 From Joke Verdoold : I alternated my bass playing hand to keep on going
17:04:36 From Lawrence : Good thought Joke
17:04:57 From Vera Stern : Or do a two eights count on the right hand to come down
17:05:39 From Alice McGarvie : No way, love it!
17:06:12 From Tara : Baroque Flamenco is a world in microcosm. Tons to explore.
17:06:50 From Alice McGarvie : Spot on Tara 😘
17:09:23 From Tovelah Hirsch : melody descending baseline ef rocks up, downscale b,cbcba
17:09:45 From Tammy H : E-F-E, E-F-E, D-C-B, C-B-C-B-A
17:10:15 From Vera Stern : Starting on the fifth step of scale
17:10:47 From Tammy H : Second phrase
E-F-E, E-F-E, D-C-B-A
17:11:04 From FF iphone : This pattern seems similar to pop tunes. with a main melody, bridge, and back to the main melody….?
17:13:27 From sarita : Thank you for the lesson! I love the game, but I have to leave. You all have a Blessed Memorial weekend!
17:26:40 From Alice McGarvie : Love the freedom, it’s invigorating and energising, just went with the flow… not sure what I did , but love the freedom of it 😘 Thank you 🙏
17:27:10 From Cathy : Getting really into the improv – just had to syncopate! Ting back to the tune is biggest challenge! And the downward bass can also turn on itself and come back up in the fourth beat.
17:27:12 From Carol Booth : Playing over and over and over and over and playing all wrong notes all the time …. and I think it sounded fabulous. So much fun. Thank you and so sorry, would, love to stay, have to go…but you gave me the gift of feeling like a flamenco musician this morning.
17:27:28 From Joke Verdoold : Today I tried to play with the rhytme without strumming and in the end I got something going on that worked.
17:28:04 From Tara : I found I could relax if I just played single notes in each hand, and it sounded good if I started both hands on A, then went down with the LH and up with the RH.
17:28:18 From Kimberly : Without néeding to worry about getting the notes right, I used some of your noodling ideas and for the first time felt ok about doing the improv section
17:30:51 From Kathy DeAngelo : It also helps that we’re playing along with you!
17:32:42 From Kathy DeAngelo : https://www.somersetharpfest.com/dhcsunday.shtml
17:38:16 From Alice McGarvie : What day is it?
17:38:30 From Lawrence : So the one day class by itself online would be $175?
17:38:47 From Karen Adams : Are ther harps available to rent at somerset?
17:39:05 From Cathy : Thanks for the session! Another winner! Got to head off now as it’s late here. See you soon x
17:39:38 From Anne Horton : Are we able to see the full schedule of Somerset?
17:40:02 From Anne Horton : In particular, what are the “Deep Dive Day” topics this year?
17:40:05 From Kathy DeAngelo : https://www.somersetharpfest.com/live-events.shtml
