And I’ve been thinking about this… You know how it is, right? You start telling a story, and then you figure – “What the heck, why not just sing it instead?” That’s what happened when someone in the audience at one of my shows last year asked me about my instrument.
The metamorphosis of the harp in my life from a 6-foot-high, 85-pound, 47-string ornately gilded behemoth to the sleek 32-string 11-pound carbon fibre harp I play now is the story of fantasy – my fantasy – and the people who helped me turn that fantasy into reality, the “DHC” electric harp.
It’s exciting to have an instrument named after you and people ask me about it all the time. But when someone asked me about it at a show last year I surprised myself by launching into a 12+ minute impromptu SONG about how it came to be. Something between Brubeck and “Alice’s Restaurant.” It went something like this:
