If you’ve ever wondered if you’re headed in the right direction and whether love will find you on your journey – this song has the answer.

I originally wrote “Closer to You” for the wedding of friends, and had the joy of singing it to them just after they walked down the aisle – but at the time I wrote it, I wondered myself, where I was headed.  The “Mama” in this song is Barbara Yule, who took me under her wing in Scotland and convinced me that no matter what I did, love would find me if I just went my own way.

“Closer to You” is one of the song I chose for the the “Essential DHC” Collection 2-CD Set.  Check out the “Download Artist’s Special” and buy tix to the Next Release Celebration at The Tin Pan in Richmond, VA – Fri. Mar. 2, 2018.

I asked my mamma how I’m gonna find the man who’s meant for me
She said he’ll turn up by and by, just you wait and see.

She said:
You don’t have to worry, honey, don’t you fret,
Cause if it’s meant to be,
Then you only got to go the way you want to go,
That’s the way he’ll be

She said: Every step you every take,
Every triumph, and each mistake
She said: Every thing, every little thing you do,
Is only gonna bring that man a little bit closer to you

I said: Mama, what if I go the wrong way round?
What if I’m lookin’ in the other direction?
What if I dawdle when I’m meant to run?
What if I do it all wrong?
Oh mamma, what if I do it all wrong?

She said:
You don’t have to worry, honey, don’t you fret,
Cause if it’s meant to be,
Then you only got to go the way you want to go,
That’s the way he’ll be

She said: Every step you every take,
Every triumph, and each mistake
She said: Every thing, every little thing you do,
Is only gonna bring that man a little bit closer to you

Well my mamma was right. Now here you are.
You’re standing beside me in the light of day.
I did everything wrong that a girl could do,
and still you came my way.
‘Cause my mamma was right. Look, here we are.
We’re standing together in the light of day.
I did everything wrong that a girl could do
and still you came my way – my way.

You were always comin’ just a little bit,
Just a little bit, just a little bit closer.
You were always comin’ just a little bit,
A little bit closer to me. To me.

But now I kind of wonder what will happen to us.
How will we stay in love forever?
What if we fumble and what if we fail?
What if we do it all wrong?

I asked my darling what we gonna do.
How we gonna make this fly?
Well he shook his head and all he said was:
“Darlin’, Darlin’ you don’t even have to try.”

He said:
You don’t have to worry, honey, don’t you fret,
Cause this was meant to be,
Now you only got to go the way you want to go,
That’s the way fr me.

He said:
Every step you every take,
Every triumph, and each mistake
He said:
Every thing, every little thing you do,
Is only gonna bring me a little, a little bit closer to you – to you.
Is gonna bring me closer to you.
And I want be just a little bit closer. Just a little bit, a little bit, always just a little bit closer. Closer. Closer …
