Three Powerful Women with One Outstanding Orchestra present

TWO HIP HARPS on STAGE

Deborah Henson-Conant, USA

Evelyn Hüber, DE

Salzburg Philharmonic ~ Elisabeth Fuchs, Conductor

SAT. OCT. 7 & SUN. OCT. 8, 2023

LIVE at the Great Hall, Salzburg University, Salzburg, Austria

Celebrate the power of three women in creative collaboration at the start of the Salzburg Philharmonic 25th anniversary in the Great Hall, Salzburg University, Salzburg, Austria.

Together with the Salzburg Philharmonic and their conductor Elisabeth Fuchs, the two Hip Harpists – composer-performer Deborah Henson-Conant (“DHC”) and soloist Evelyn Huber, will each feature their two very different instruments with sounds and music you’d never expect from a harp – combining classical, jazz, Latin Rhythms – and the experience of hearing two electric harps together with symphony orchestra.

Two Masters of the Harp

A legendary innovator in the harp world, the Grammy-Nominated Henson-Conant has toured as a solo artist, with bands, and as a symphony soloist with countless U.S. ensembles. , toured with guitar legend Steve Vai and changed the way the world sees the harp.

Prize-winning soloist Evelyn Huber is the recipient of the Bavarian Culture Prize and two-time “Best Live Act of the Year “ Winner of the Echo Jazz Prize (with Quadro Nuevo).

Both Harps are visually stunning — and dramatically different.

Huber plays a modified concert-grand “Pedal Harp” – similar in size to the 6′-tall gold harps in at the back of an orchestra, but designed for hybrid acoustic/electric performance with a piezo pickup on each string.

Henson-Conant is recognized as the world’s master of the solid-body wearable electric ‘harness harp’ or ‘body harp.’ Less than half the size of a standard concert harp – it’s a sleek, fully electric, carbon-fiber instrument, with the sound of a harp and the power of an electric guitar. Designed in collaboration between Henson-Conant and the CAMAC harp company, this iconic instrument has now been named after her: “The DHC Harp.”

On Oct. 7th at 7:30 pm and Oct. 8th at 6:00 pm, Henson-Conant and Huber bring their remarkable instruments, voices, and stories to the Great Hall, Salzburg University, Salzburg, Austria, for the first time in a concert with the Salzburg Philharmonic conducted by Elisabeth Fuchs.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Three Powerful Women ∙ Two Hip Harps ∙ One Outstanding Sympnony

What makes this show powerful and different is not just that there are three women in the power positions of composer, soloist, and conductor for this concert – but that they’re playing together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Salzburg Philharmonic.

Deborah Henson-Conant

GRAMMY®-Nominated Composer-performer

Dazzling harp playing, gorgeous jazz/pop singing, comic timing and impressive songwriting …with orchestrations fresh and exuberant as her stage personality.” — Austin American-Statesman

Expect fire, folks; this will not be your average evening at the orchestra.” — Buffalo Beat

Deborah Henson-Conant (“DHC”) is a GRAMMY®-Nominated harpist, composer and vocalist. She’s known for her on-stage image, her humor, passion and innovation, wearing the electric body-harp she designed. She uses a looper pedal to layer melodies and guitar effects on her harp – and plays solo or in collaboration with symphonies and chamber ensembles – always mixing music, story & movement. A legend in the harp world, she’s opened for Ray Charles, toured with icons of the music world like the Boston Pops and guitar legend Steve Vai, and jammed onstage with renowned powerhouses like Bobby McFerrin and Mason Williams.

Henson-Conant is the founder of Hip Harp Academy, an online training program for harp improvisation which has trained thousands of harpists worldwide since it’s creation in 2014. Her symphonic works for harp and orchestra are now performed and recorded by harpists throughout the world. Her award-winning musical “The Golden Cage” was filmed in NYC in 2022 and released on Streaming Musicals in 2023. Her 2017 TEDx talk chronicles her collaboration with the French CAMAC harp company to create her signature harp, the “DHC” which is now played by harpists around the world.

Deborah’s Instrument

Deborah Henson-Conant (DHC) created the new “DHC Electric Harp” in collaboration with the CAMAC Harp Company.  Her 2018 TEDx talk tells the genesis of this new instrument and the impact it’s now having on harpists worldwide.

Evelyn Huber

Prize-winning Harp soloist and composer

Pure Joy  of music and life” Jazzthetik Magazine

“Evelyn Huber awakens the spirits with a beguiling mix of South American music, classical music, jazz and Spanish film music … Fiery and furious, but always fine and extremely soulful.” City Magazine, Munich, Germany

As the recipient of the Bavarian Culture Prize and two-time winner of the Echo (“Best Live Act of the year“ with Quadro Nuevo), Evelyn Huber jams, hums, buzzes, whistles and swings on the harp, effortlessly allowing it to resonate with exquisitely woven melodies at a stunning pace. Flirtatious at times, Evelyns playing seduces with the most tender and angelic of strings. With charm, technical perfection and boundless enthusiasm, Evelyn Huber draws an unprecedented range of soundscapes from this wonderful instrument.

Evelyn’s Instrument

Evelyn performs on an electrified concert grand harp. Inspired by tango, jazz, expressionism, and the Latin American joie de vivre, she has transformed the classical concert harp with a unique music style all her own and electrified it with a special pickup system from CAMAC Harps.
