Last year, Melanie started sharing something she was shy about: it was the story of a little harp who wanted to play with others, illustrated with her drawings and her music. We all fell in love with the little harp and its adventures – and always await the next episodes.

But I was unprepared for THIS new adventure – when the little harp came to see ME!

What is a Final-Beginning Project?

At the end of each Quarter, Academy members share their discoveries in 3-minute ‘Final-Beginning’ Projects — videos and short written interviews that share their creative process and how they used what they learned the previous quarter to move closer to their creative goals.

Building from Snippets

To ground her project, Melanie drew from one of the Academy’s most playful frameworks: the “cats and dogs giggle” snippet – (a chord progression musicians call “1-6-2-5.”) Like many Hip Harp Academy members, Melanie discovered that “Snippets” open the door to endless imaginative expansion.

Snippets are a little like musical DNA: tiny fundamental patterns that general musical life forms. Each contains everything needed to create endlessly adaptable musical experiences, no matter what your technical level. They’re something I discovered as a child and are now a fundamental part of the Academy curriculum.

The Struggles Behind the Scenes

But Melanie’s journey wasn’t easy. Work stress left her with less time than she hoped for, and when she tried to weave videos from a DHC workshop into her piece, technical challenges piled up. And just when she thought she had it all worked out, the C string of her pedal harp snapped.

With strings difficult to source in Germany, she couldn’t replace it in time. Instead of stopping, though, Melanie decided to include the exploding C-string in the story.

What could have been a setback became part of the tale.

Individuality and Unity

At the workshop Deborah gave in Germany last spring – with 50 harps in one big room – one experience stood out for Melanie: the power of individuality becoming one. She wanted to honor that feeling through her project, layering different harps together.

That was difficult to synchronize but by focusing on the Academy’s motto of CONNECTION – not perfection she found herself saying “With the resources I have at the moment, I can’t do it better — and that’s good enough.”

The Deeper Ahas

Through it all, Melanie discovered something that many adult learners share: creativity ripens when we give it time. Even when she felt overwhelmed or “not up to it,” she found that she could still create something meaningful.

Her biggest takeaway?
Enjoy individuality. Let it be what it is.

In Hip Harp Academy, projects like Melanie’s remind us what creative expression is truly about: connection, story, discovering our authentic voice – and sharing it.
