I was out running this morning, listening to the news, when I first heard about Magawa, the Hero Rat who was awarded the British PDSA animal bravery medal for clearing landmines in Cambodia. This is was the NPR article I was listening to. And here’s where you can see some fetching portraits of Magawa

But heard something else in the article that made me gasp: Magawa – you and I are SOUL MATES. It’s true. While I am nowhere near as brave, skilled or smart as you, we two share a DEEP LOVE OF WATERMELON as the MOST celebratory of repasts!

And just yesterday, I took an emergency run to Whole Foods only to discover that watermelon season is OVER .

So, Magawa – today I sing this song of Watermelon to YOU as you savor your Celebratory Watermelon! AND … in the immortal words of Mark Twain:

“It is the chief of this world’s luxuries, king by the grace of God over all the fruits of the earth. When one has tasted [Watermelon], he knows what the angels eat.”

Also hero rats.

And me.

I celebrate YOU Magawa in this, my Ode to Watermelon!
